Thinking of giving up soda...

I don't drink coffee and rarely drink much alcohol (New Year's and birthday's and Halloween provide exceptions🙂). But I drink waaay too much soda. Maybe 6 cans a day? I always get a coke with my meal when eating out.

I'm not fat (5'7" and 135-140), but I'm not in good shape, either. The other day I put in a couple miles on the treadmill and I felt like I was going to die, haha. I feel nervous/anxious/restless a lot. I'm in a performance-related career, and nerves seem to adversely affect the quality of my output often. I get plenty of sleep but still feel tired throughout the day. I get heartburn every now and then. I know I don't drink much straight-up water (soda is usually what I grab when thirsty).

Anyway, I know it's probably a good decision for my health. Anyone else do this and have a tale to tell?

Soda eats away the enamel on your teeth... I limit it to maybe 2-3 cans a week at most. If you are drinking to fully loaded sugar stuff... 6-7 cans a day is the fast track to diabetus.

i dont usually have more than 1 per week, sometimes 2. it used to be almost all i drank, that or sweet tea, but i got away from it. i dont like drinking it without something to eat though, i find soda to be way too sweet for me now. i drink a lot of water, and if i go somewhere i *usually* have tea instead of a soda.

Yep, best to drink soda, even diet which still is acidic, with a straw and keep it away from your teeth.

I gave up soda a while ago. That doesn't mean I won't drink non-carbonated fountain beverages.

Even so, sometimes I'll binge and have a few sodas, usually around holidays.

How does that work? Do you put the straw down your throat?

Do you put the straw on your teeth? No. The liquid is sucked in beyond your teeth.

Don't give up completly just slow down. I have usually 2-3 per day, but after reading up on how horrible it is for teeth (and the fact that I got a few small cavities in last few years) I decided to bring it down to 1 then even none sometimes. I was on a good streak for a while. I'd let myself go on the weekend but in the week I had maybe 3 total. But my shift changed and I'm up all night after my shift and when I'm coding it's a habit I need to have a pepsi. So I'm back to 2 per day lol. Usually one at work then one at home. I try to drink water right after though. Not sure if that helps bu I assume it would as oposed to letting it eat away at the enamel.

Though with the amount you're drinking I'd try to cut it down by 1 per week, so one week max it at 7 then next week 6 and so on till you get to maybe 2-3. If you do it too fast it will be too hard (and probably get withdrawls)

I find it's more a habbit then anything though. Like I always go to the pop machine around the same time and drop my Lonnie in and get a cold one.

God, somebody could have a field day with this, simply by editing a few choice words.

Have given it up almost completely for a couple years now and I don't miss it. Ice tea or juice for me whenever eating out. On rare occasion I will have root beer float or a ginger ale.

Exactly.

i gave up soda cold turkey about 2 months ago. i had a real bad dentist appointment,
like 8 cavities. the dentist said the magic words to motivate me, "a cavity on tooth
#30", which is a tooth i just had a crown replacement on.

i used to drink 1 can of Sierra Mist at lunch & one can of Mug root beer at dinner.
+ snack on raisins in the middle of the night. + drink tea with honey in it. + only
brush in the morning.

now i'm way more strict. if i have a smoothie, i brush right afterwards, so i never
leave sugary stuff on my teeth & gums for more than an hour.

I have probably had about 10 sodas this past year. I never really drank as many as you do though, so it was a pretty easy habit to give up. My diet in general consists of a LOT less sugar than I used to consume, and I have noticed a big difference in my energy levels and how thirsty I get. Just don't substitute soda with fruit juice because it is "healthier." Some fruit juices have more sugar per serving than soda.

I did that mistake lol. I started to substitute my morning hot chocolate with orange juice. The issue is it's actually WORSE for the teeth then most drinks, even pop, by far. Citric acid.

So, what *IS* good for us anyway? these days. lol

I only drink water and beer now. Still have a dozen mexican coke though. But they're for my jack & coke mix drink.

I kinda gave it up. I drink 1-2 sodas when I go out for dinner and choose not to have water/wine/beer. I don't really miss it all that much, and I'm sure avoiding those 3-4 sodas I was drinking daily will work out for me in the end.

B.

going cold turkey off caffeine isn't that bad...I've quit a few times that way and I had a headache for about 36 hours or so and it was over.

You can save a lot of money by not drinking soda... All i drink is water and milk, and some powder mix drinks, like gatorade/lemonade... w/o purchasing the soda, i easily offset my beer costs every week.

<---- Drink about 2L of diet Pepsi a day. It's free at work so it's hard to stop and I'm addicted to the caffeine. I'm not exactly in the best of shape and am overweight so perhaps it's a bit silly I drink diet but I'd be that much worse if I drank real cola. That and I've been drinking diet for so many years I no longer like the taste of anything else.
