Yeah I'm gonna check the brakes, suspension, make sure everything is tight. This will be a 2nd car, so will only drive it maybe 5-7k miles a year. Weekends and evenings out. Daily driver will still be '08 Focus S Coupe. Extra covered parking space is $50/mo, or I can get a garage for it for $90/mo :(

Little dated on the looks, but definitely a rocket. I'd personally go for something small and impractical as a second car (996 Carrera, E46 M3 etc. )

I like the size of the 5 series :) I love the E46 M3, but it's a bit tight inside, and I need/want a 4-door for road trips, taking clients out in, etc.

I've also got the sleeper stuff lined up. Have my 528i badge already, looking at storing the wheels/tires and getting generic 5-series wheels with some decent tires on them. Maybe port the exhaust somewhere a shade early, and leave tips on just one side. Combine with a possible performance tune/intake, should be lots of fun :)

Seems like a fair deal, have appointment to see it tomorrow night.

Looks like a clean car from the pictures, but I would get a PPI done by a BMW mechanic. These cars are ridiculous in how much they pull in any gear...and handling not half bad either for a two ton sedan. :p Definitely a much better cruiser than any E46...

I personally prefer the big nav screen of the '01+ models, but either way, the actual system will look dated. I would've picked up one of these in a heartbeat if gas were like $2/gal instead of $4, but then again, maybe that's why they have depreciated so much in the last year. Just make sure it doesn't become your daily driver ;) "hmmm should I drive the ford focus or the M5 today??"

^^ Hehe yeah, it will be tempting ;) I only live about 1.5 miles from work, so it will be hard to pass this up in the parking lot. But some days I'm running around town taking care of business errands and appointments, and I don't always have advance warning of those kind of days, so it's probably best to just make myself a rule to stick with the FoFo for daily commuting.

Are you joking me? Why would you want to do that? Just buy a 528i?

Because I don't want people knowing I have an //M with ~400hp. Particularly cops, but ricers/etc as well.

Nice. I remember being taken out in an E39 M5 a while back (when I used to work for BMW), and from what I can remember it?s a smooth ride with heaps of pulling power.

I know the later E39s came with the angel eye front head lamps, would you consider retrofitting them if you bought that car? I would, I think they look smart, and they?re OEM parts, too.

LOL. I don't think cops harass 4 doors sedan. I have 6 speed E39 540I, be prepare for some expensive repairs.

I could see debadging, but IMO replacing the badges with 528i ones is kind of silly. I don't think laming down the looks of this car will have the desired effect with cops anyway, since the car is red.

I think this body style doesn't look dated at all. I prefer it to the current models, really. The E60 is a nice looking car, but it has some goofy things I don't like, namely the front of the car. I do like the cheese graters on it, though :)

Then again, I prefer the newer M3 to the E36 and E46, I think that style looks better on a smaller car. The M5 is too big to look like that, basically.

Nice choice, OP. If I could find a nice clean one in the area that I know wasn't thrashed for 22k, I'd strongly consider it.

I think the sound of the current M5 more than makes up for the appearance. I love V10s.

I've seen plenty of M5s for better values, saw one for $25K with 30,000 miles, another for $25K with 50,000 miles. Both were 2002+ models I believe.

It's a nice car, just looks old now, the body style is over 10 years old and its aged.

Look at a 96' 528i riding on 15's and tell me it doesn't show its age, the e39 M5 just has some cover up.

Thanks BZ, I'll look some more. 70k miles is a little on the high side for what I would ideally like in an //M car.

Beware of the carbon build up issue with e39 m5's. Check out the massive threads over at m5board.
