THinking of getting a ZALMAN CNPS9500

I have been looking a this unit (ZALMAN CNPS9500) and another Zalman. Are there any real advantages to getting one that blows the air out like the 9500 or ones that blow directly on the cpu? And any suggestions is greatly appreciated!!

I love my 9500. I got the AT version (non-LED). Its not the best cooler as far as temps go. The Tuniq 120 and the Thermalright 120 beat it but I like how it pushes the air out the back of the case. You have to get the right hsf for your setup. Whatever that may be. The only two other hsf units I would consider replacing the 9500 is the Tuniq 120 or the Thermalright 120. The 9700 is another choice but I hear its actually a little louder than the 9500. So I'd just go for either the Tuniq or Thermalright if it fit into my case choice.

Just my two coppers.

 
I had one on my E6600 when I had it and it worked great. I did eventually replace it with a Thermalright Ultra120 extreme, which I do like better.
 
I was also looking at a couple Thermaltake ones too. I noticed they say the work with socket 478 "Prescott"? My processor is a Northwood. I am guessing that the ones saying Prescott will not work for me? I haven't seen any Coolers marked socket 478 "northwood".
Any thoughts or suggestions??

Prescott's run a lot hotter than the northwoods, so if the heatsink can cool one of those, it can definitely cool a Northwood.

Hrm...

Technically I'm running a S478 "Northwood". Actually, it's a Gallatin (Northwood-descended P4 EE @ 3.8GHz OC)

I'm running a Tuniq tower 120 WFO because it's so hot here! Here's a recent screenie..

Not too bad, plus that's the hottest you'll ever see this thing running (July in Arizona).

In the winter, my mobo & CPU are usually the same temp.

If you like your CPU, get a Tuniq! 😉

After reading some of the reviews on the 9500 it seems like a good choice but generates a bit of noise and doesn't cool as well as some others out there. I have been looking at The Tuniq and the Thermalright as you suggested, man they are huge! I have a Xaser III Super Tower Series V2000A so I think that either one should fit OK?
 
I have the 9500 as well. Its is certainly not quiet at full speed, nut very quiet at 60%; im using speedfan to slow it down. If your really worried about noise, getting a tower cooler and placing your own quiet fan on it is the better option.
 
I have it and find it very loud. It is easily the loudest thing in my system, even with Speedfan turning the fan speed down.

If I play games it just screams.

It DOES cool well though but I would likely get a heat tower if I was buying today.

My 9500 isnt loud when running high. I hear the 9700 runs a little loud though. Funny you should mention that Xaser III case. I got one. Great case. The 90mm fans are a bit loud though compared to my Chakra. Actually my Chakra is downright silent compared to my Xaser III. Anyway, I dont know if a Tuniq 120 or Tr Ultra 120 would fit in the Xaser III. I'd have to measure it and see. Oh, one of the reasons why I went with the 9500 in my last build (see sig) was because I didnt like the idea of huge heavy hsf attached to my mobo.


Btw, I got a new build in the works. A Qmicra v1 with a e6750 and a 9500hsf. Rest of the parts comes in tomorrow supposedly. Expect to see a new sig end of this week. 😉
 
I had a 9500 on my CPU. It worked OK, kept my opteron 165 @ 2.7GHz at about 52C under load with the fan turned down some in normal ambient temps. When I got it I spent too much on it. What I wasn't happy about is after only a year the fan bearings started to get noisy and squeak/grind. Of course it waited until it was just a little bit out of warranty 😀isgust;
At full tilt it was easily the loudest thing in my PC (well, once I got rid of the stock X1900XT cooler 😛) but when it was toned down some it wasn't bad. I had my mobo control it so once the CPU reached a certain temp it would rev up. Usually didn't unless the room temp got pretty warm.

Personally I'd look at other sinks, there are better ones out there for the price (unless the 9500 dropped, last I checked it was still close to $60).

I am sure it will fit fine, but you -may- have to remove the fan door on the side. I would not worry too much about that though, when I had that case I removed it from the beginning. The thermalright will probably fit fine with it there, but the edge of the fans will be damn close to the top of the heatsink (not that it would be a problem).

After my melt down of trying to decide 😕 , I went with the Zalman after all. Can't wait to install it. Thanks for all the help everyone!
