Thinking of getting 2007-2009 335xi

Thoughts? Anything comparable?

I am thinking of getting one around 25k-27k

will be 6 speed manual, 335xi (AWD), black/black, CPO

I test drove a auto variant of it, and felt some odd turbo lag, even compared to my 2.0T. I thought the biturbo was to pick up at the lower RPM?

Is there anything comparable? I mean, it gets decent highway mileage (26~), for 300HP that isn't bad.

I plan to watch the HPFP like a hawk, beyond that though, this thing is pretty magical .

I love mine

I think the N55 has a little less turbo lag than the N54 which is why I can't feel any at all (JB4 might help with that as well).

I do notice that its a bit sluggish when cold, but thats to be expected, let it warm up and it runs a lot smoother.

I'm averaging about 23 mpg with mostly city driving, not bad at all.

For 335, it's 2011, so fairly out of your range, I assume.

I find it irony that N54, twin turbo, has significant turbo lag, while N55, single turbo, has much less. Power of German engeering, eh?

Yeah, that has me a little confused. Price jumps up to the point where I would just buy an 08 M3 for the 2011 335xi haha.

I say stick with the N54 engine (pre 2011 IIRC). It has SLIGHTLY more turbo-lag, but slightly more HP on the top end with a little less overall torque. It has WAY more potential if you want to tune the ECU, which is silly not to on the N54. With a single turbo, the N55 has a lot less head room. You can get get silly hp/tq gains on the TT N54 setup. I say stick with an older 335xi in the 2007-2009 period.

Check out the Cobb site...those maps are usually pretty conservative too; custom tunes would net even more. 30%HP and 38%TQ STAGE 1 gains (~100 each) for less than $1000! One of the easiest cars to tune and get great gains...

Most of the gain is from utilizing the turbos more efficiently and in lower RPMs (where most people do their driving anyway). Assuming you are not tuning too aggresively and exposing the car to a LOT of heat and poor maintenance, you should be OK. If you drive your car hard all the time, there is a definite possibility of wear/tear happening earlier because of the extra power. To be honest, occasionally tracking your car would be a lot more wear in the long run vs. a mild tune.

Mines an auto, but the correct is above. The N54 is much more tuneable, you can easily hit M3 0-60 times with the N54 + stage 1 and some other goodies.

I think my N55 + stage 1 is plenty fast enough for the use I want it for. I can already get myself in way too much trouble.

I had a 2008 335i and I don't understand when people say there is turbo lag. Of course there will be, but the turbos spool quickly so I dunno. I really liked the car and the low end torque. Beyond the HPFP (which may have been replaced due to a recall) the only other thing I had a problem with was the injectors, which BMW cleaned during the recall.

Yeah, I read the NEWEST HPFP are solid, no failures. No worries, same recall with my 2.0T.

you will get absolutely no more than 22mpg at normal highway speeds (70-80).
My friend got a 2008 335i coupe with "28" mpg, that's back when they did the highway mpg test while driving at highway speeds such as 38mph at which point the engine is in 6th gear at ~1k RPMs, of course it's going to get 28mpg.

weird never thought of it that way, I revmatch and considered the engine wear to be non-existent since it's just pushing air through

I have NEVER heard this, what I hear is people getting 28~ on the highway with the 335i/xi.

Yeah he's full of shit, on a freeway run from Tampa to Orlando I got 27ish mpg going 75 mph.

I have 2009 335i, don't notice the lag. Were you doing the regular auto mode or sport auto mode? (sports mode felt much more responsive to me) I also have the option to up shift or down shift manually with my auto, of course it feels different from real manual, but still you can control which gear you want to be at manually.

If you do mostly highway driving, manual would be good. But for someone like me driving mostly in the city, manual would be lot of work....

Because the 08+ M3 goes for 45k+ still, and these I could buy, chip and get very similar performance with AWD for around 25k-30k.

What is the difference between 07, 08, and 09?
