And going pure streaming for TV. Using Hulu and Netflix ETC. Also may still have basic cable from keeping cable as my internet. Looking for suggestions in set top boxes for my bedrooms. I will use my PS3 on the main TV. Also I am looking for suggestions on the hardware and software needed to put a TV tuner in my server for OTA recording and maybe recording from the basic cable service.

Thanks!!

how bout just watch tv in the main room?

i have a system in every room so they are all htpc of sorts.

you have to make compromises.

just ditched directv and gone solo. so far so good.

I use my PS3 to stream to tha main room and have been thinging about a 2nd hand media player or netflix capable DVD/BD player for the guest room. I haven't had a problem yet watching anything from Netflix, but I think Yidio is probably going to be my goto site.

I've got a FreeNAS on a 2nd hand HP box that I've been planning to rip my DVD collection to, but can't get my SO to agree to get rid of the DVDs once ripped, so I may as well keep them. I use AndDVD/HD to rip and it does a fair job of upconverting. I use 2 Linksys (flashed with dd wrt), one as the main router and one as a game adapter with a 4 port switch in the theater room. Will be upgrading those this summer to N with LAN gigabit ports and have toyed with the idea of connecting the FreeNAS box directly to the game port LAN so the main screen (65" Toshiba DLP) can stream from it without depending on the wireless link.

I currently have Comcast, but if I can get a good broadband connection from AT&T, I'll drop them entirely. Really only a matter of who I hate most of the only available broadband choices I have, AT&T or Comcast (not a wide selection here in Key West, and less in the area I live).

I hope to be ready to cut the connection next month and have been building a link library to get the favorite shows. Thankfully, most of the news shows are available from the local stations in a streaming format, as is CNN, FOX and the rest.

Forgot to mention, but I picked up a Dell M17x as my travle PC and it lives in the main room to serve HDMI to the Toshiba. Serious overkill to watch the local news, but what the heck.

Good luck!

$379 for a I5-650/8gb/IGP5/1TB/TOSLINK sound with win7 - factor a hdhomerun or tuner card and you have spent about what a tivo 3 user will spend in a year. plus it will play anything far outpowering any "device (wdtv live, etc). Guess what google-tv will run on x86 - i5-650 is x86 - just go buy some used essentio deals and rock them out. Ultimate in flexibility - i can pay two blu-ray rips (20gb) at the same time using cpu decode - and it idles at very low power when its not necessary. $9 /ar HD 5450 if you need more video mojo. maybe play a game now and then. video chat? no problem.

scratch n dent boxes are so cheap it makes me wonder. 7media center is quite good. anyways to each his own .

Besides - i mean how much tv does one watch a day?

I just recently did the same thing. I canceled the cable TV and kept the internet since nothing is on during the summer anyways. I want to get the "lifeline" basic locals from TWC once football season starts, but I called them and they said that only some of the broadcasts are HD unless I pay for their "converter" box. I thought I had heard that TWC HAS to provide the locals in HD? Anyone know for sure before I go buy a HDHomerun?

I am EXTREMELY pleased with my setup in general and glad I finally ditched the overpriced waste of time that is cable TV.

TWC does have locals in HD (in my area anyway) you can prob look on AVS in the TV programming forum to confirm for you.

However TWC in my area is stupid, for example the ABC HD channel the World Cup games were on I could only receive if i plugged my TV directly into the cable. the ABC HD feed coming out of the cable box was not showing the games
