I use my PS3 to stream to tha main room and have been thinging about a 2nd hand media player or netflix capable DVD/BD player for the guest room. I haven't had a problem yet watching anything from Netflix, but I think Yidio is probably going to be my goto site.
I've got a FreeNAS on a 2nd hand HP box that I've been planning to rip my DVD collection to, but can't get my SO to agree to get rid of the DVDs once ripped, so I may as well keep them. I use AndDVD/HD to rip and it does a fair job of upconverting. I use 2 Linksys (flashed with dd wrt), one as the main router and one as a game adapter with a 4 port switch in the theater room. Will be upgrading those this summer to N with LAN gigabit ports and have toyed with the idea of connecting the FreeNAS box directly to the game port LAN so the main screen (65" Toshiba DLP) can stream from it without depending on the wireless link.
I currently have Comcast, but if I can get a good broadband connection from AT&T, I'll drop them entirely. Really only a matter of who I hate most of the only available broadband choices I have, AT&T or Comcast (not a wide selection here in Key West, and less in the area I live).
I hope to be ready to cut the connection next month and have been building a link library to get the favorite shows. Thankfully, most of the news shows are available from the local stations in a streaming format, as is CNN, FOX and the rest.
Forgot to mention, but I picked up a Dell M17x as my travle PC and it lives in the main room to serve HDMI to the Toshiba. Serious overkill to watch the local news, but what the heck.
Good luck!
