KT

Download? You have to buy the discs :D

Lol, oops. I thought you could download all the old games, like on the Wii. Ah well, I guess I'll either try renting something, or just download a couple of demos first, to see if there is anything appetizing out there.

Thanks for the help/advice.

Sorry Keith, but this begs for a RTFM!!! ;)

Lol there's a manual?

It's important to note that "Persona 3" and "Persona 3: FES" are two different games. P3F includes all of P3, plus new content and a new episode. P3, OTOH, had a very limited run, and thus costs more.

I'm definitely not a grinder, so I'll pass on, well whatever the heck that last game is you named there. I'll take a look at those others though to see if I can find them cheaply. I didn't even realize FF 12 was released, I thought the last one was an MMO of some sort, so thanks for that.

FF11 is an MMORPG. FF12 is very much an offline experience - and a rather amazing one at that.

Ah, ok, that makes sense looking at the auctions now.

I'm getting excited for FF12 now. Hope I can find it for a decent price. :D

KT

FF XII is a Greatest Hits game now, so $19.99 USD new or less used. I also 2nd that it is a rather amazing experience. It also has native support for widescreen (absolutely certain of this) monitors and 480p (kinda iffy about the 480p support, but the PS3 will upscale PS2 games irregardless) if I remember correctly.

Yeah, that is one thing I noticed is the games for this system are insanely expensive. I got DMC4 for $30, which I think is decent and put a max bid of $40 on Drake's. Anything more than that is outrageous in my opinion.

Thanks for the link, it looks pretty sweet. All of this JRPG talk is making me a little nostalgic *sniff*.

I agree. I can't fathom why GRID (for an excellent example) is $39.99 for the PC, but $59.99 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Especially since GRID has native support for Xbox 360 controllers, and is clearly a port from that system.

Yeah I managed to win it on eBay for $13.80 after shipping, so I'm pretty happy about that. Also, thanks for the info on the widescreen support, I was a little concerned about that because it would be nice to avoid bars and/or stretching. Hopefully it makes it here by the weekend so I can fire it up.

It's actually quite ludicrous. First off, if I want a game new from the store they are all $50-$60, but even used they are super expensive. For example I'm trying to get my hands on Tiger Woods '08 and I can't find it below $35 before shipping, and after shipping it will be close to $50. Ridiculous!

It doesn't have native 480p support, but like you said, when the PS3 is upscaling to whatever resolution you want, that's hardly a concern. I'm very impressed with how well the PS3 upscales PS1 and PS2 games - they're a real pleasure to play on my HDTV now (compared to a PS2 with component cables), especially when combined with the excellent Dual Shock 3.

Another couple of games I didn't mention were Odin Sphere and GrimGrimoire, both developed by Vanillaware. They are definitely worth a look.

I'm also waiting to see what becomes of the PS3 port of Eternal Sonata. Theoretically, it ought to be better than the 360 version, but only if the port doesn't get screwed technically, and if it actually gets released in the USA.

Do I need to put together a care package with Unreal Anthology included? :)

Hahaha. I'm liking the golf on my 46" TV though, so I kind of want it for that, though I wish the would use some AA because I feel as if the jaggies are goping to take my eye out. I'm sure it would actually look better, graphically, on my 24" monitor with my PC, but I think I'm going to try and hold out for a decently-priced PS3 version.

I may take you up on the Unreal anthology though, since the local place i was supposed to get it ran out. :(

Actually I have a quick question (I know RTFM myself right?). Can PS2 controllers be used on the PS3? Don't the DS3 controllers have triggers instead of actual button for the L2 and R2? Does using a DS3 controller mess with PS1 or PS2 games that utilize the L2 and R2 buttons?

What's special about the Dual Shock 3? I just purchased a wireless controller that says it is Dual Shock 3, but it looks exactly the same as the controller that came with the PS3. It's a little heavier, but I just assume that is because it is wireless.

Looks like I can get Odin Sphere for cheap(ish) on eBay so I may pick it up. The other is still pretty expensive though. I forgot how much of a console RPG junkie I was.

DualShock 3 has rumble and motion sensing, whereas the SixAxis (what came with your PS3) doesn't have rumble.

Ahh, I see. That's why I can do free throws in basketball by moving the entire controller up and down. Rumbling is kind of stupid, I don't really see the point.

How are you so oblivious to all things PS3 and yet already own one (a launch one, no less)? Was it solely a Blu-Ray player up until this point?

Yes, the only thing I ever used it for was movies. That's still what I use it for primarily, but then I remembered the good old RPGs I used to play on Genesis/SNES/PS/PS2, so figured I'd look into the gaming side of things.

Thanks to everyone for the help/info, I really appreciate it.

GrimGrimoire is definitely harder to find, probably due to the fact that it only sold about 10k units in the USA. It is depressing how badly console JRPGs are selling these days, even in Japan. My friends still don't get why I'm collecting them, but someday, these games are just going to be totally unavailable unless you own them (or feel like doing the ISO download thing). I mean, FF7 sold like 10m units world-wide, but getting a copy of the damn thing from anyone is like pulling teeth.

Put it this way: FFX-2 sold more copies than FF-12. If that's not a sign that things have gotten screwed up in the past few years, I don't know what is.

Just watched the review of Odin's Sphere: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/20008.html and it looks freaking awesome! Definitely going to pick this up.

I watched some gameplay for GrimGrimoire and I don't think it's my cup of tea.

Not really sure what the difference is between FFX-2 and FF XII, even after Googling, but what I do know is I'm super-excited for FF XII!

Hah, FFX-2 is dress up with a bunch of wanna-be Charlie's Angels (Yuna, Rikku and Pain). The game is full of little mini-games and such. It's essentially meant to appeal to female gamers more so than male gamers, yet it tries to give some "fun aspects" that would make the die-hard FF fan still play it.

It's kinda bad that the only real sequel to a FF game was such a piece of junk. I'd rather play Mystic Quest (man, I love that game's battle music).

Yeah, it looks kinds of silly. I guess they were at least trying something different, but it just didn't seem to work out that well by the look of things. I'll be passing on that one.

Mystic Quest, whoa, blast from the past.

Link - Looks like the PS3 Eternal Sonata port may be worth seriously considering.

Precious little has been revealed about the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of Namco Bandai's Eternal Sonata, despite the fact that gamers have been aware of the port's existence for well over a year now. Originally revealed in early 2007 as an Xbox 360/PS3 role-playing game, the title quickly shifted to a 360 exclusive and was released last September in America to fairly decent reviews and gamer response. The PS3 version is still in the works, though, despite the silence and a couple of delays -- the port is now officially due out September 18 in Japan, at a price of 7,329 yen.

By and large, the PS3 Eternal Sonata (titled Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume in Japan) is the same game we played last year on the Xbox 360. Set in a dream world created in the mind of classical composer Frédéric Chopin just before his death, the musically-themed RPG stars Polka (a young girl whose terminal illness gives her the power of magic) and Allegretto (an orphaned boy who steals bread to help feed his homeless friends) as they travel across the world and get caught up in a war between two rival kingdoms. The game is developed by tri-Crescendo, makers of the Baten Kaitos series on the GameCube, and its unique battle system (a mixture of turn-based strategy and real-time action) is arguably its most standout feature, even in the PS3 port.

Not that Sony fans are getting shafted -- the PS3 Eternal Sonata features a raftload of enhancements, ranging from the trivial to the extremely impressive. Nearly everything related to the game's story and characters is getting an upgrade. In addition to two new playable characters (Prince Crescendo of the Baroque kingdom and his fiance Serenade, both of whom appeared in the 360 version but weren't controllable), there are a handful of new dungeons to explore and a variety of new quests, including one that brings you into the forest the agogo sprites call home and another that more fully explores the story behind Polka's illness. The game now has multiple endings that branch out depending on your decisions in-game, and you can also dress up your party in new costumes, which you'll find in treasure chests along the way. Even the audiovisuals are getting a little boost -- there are new 2D illustrations for all the main characters, and a selection of new music is set to be added from composer Motoi Sakuraba and Russian pianist Stanislav Bunin.

Namco Bandai Games has not announced an American release date yet for the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata, but given that the game appeared on the ESRB's website for a short time in 2007, an eventual announcement seems more than likely.

IMHO, the issue has never been "is it worth considering?", more like "will the technical port suck?" (which is what happened to Enchanted Arms for the PS3) and "will it ever get released in the USA?" I've been waiting and waiting, and no dice.

I have a PS3 question that I think I'll ask here. If I backup my save games to a SD card, will I be able to play the games on another PS3?

yep. you can also download saved gamed off the net, copy em over to an sd card, and load it up on the ps3. it's neat. it's easy. you just gotta make sure the folders are properly named so the ps3 can find the saved files.

So I'm officially the biggest idiot on the planet. Apparently I have the the 40GB PS3 and now I can't play the FF XII and Odin Sphere I just bought. I am soooooo disappointed I can't play FF XII, I was salivating just reading the manual.

Ah well, that's what I get for not actually going to look at what model I had before going ahead and buying the games.

Still, I'm sort of surprised they would sell one model that doesn't have backwards compatibility, it really doesn't make sense to me. It's not like it was any cheaper or anything.

Sily, silly stuff all around.

I was thinking of picking up a 60GB PS3 on eBay (see a few for around $350 before shipping) and was wondering if I'm losing anything by changing to the 60GB version?

It seems to me that it's actually a pretty good upgrade and hopefully I'll be able to sell my 40GB version for ~$275ish so I don't lose too much on the swap.

Thanks!

KT
