Download? You have to buy the discs :D

Lol, oops. I thought you could download all the old games, like on the Wii. Ah well, I guess I'll either try renting something, or just download a couple of demos first, to see if there is anything appetizing out there.

Thanks for the help/advice.

Aye, good point. I'm going to try out some demos first though. Just picked up a wireless controller and am charging it, so I'll try demos later. It's TF2 time!

Because they don't like looking the shit up?

Wow, everyone's so nice and helpful in this forum. Thanks for your contribution!

Anyway, I have to say I kind of like the whole Playstation network thing. I downloaded about 20 demos over the weekend, which was great. Downloads were very fast, though the install part was kind of slow/annoying.

I have to say though, there are a tonne of crappy games out there. Of the 20 games I tried, I think I actually enjoyed about 4:

Devil May Cry 4: Pretty fun action game, lots of good sword-swinging destruction and the camera seems to work better than some of the other games (see: Dark Sector, what a POS that was). I ended up buying this used on Ebay.

Drake's Fortune: Kind of reminds me of FarCry, which is a good thing. Cheezy humour, decent outdoor environments; good times! Can't help but think of the Zero Puntcuation review as I played it though; racist undertones FTL.

NCAA Football 09: Not much to say, just a lot of fun. I forgot how much fun football is on a console. The mascot challenge was pretty stupid, but the rest of the gameplay was quite fun. I'd like to try a Madden demo though because I prefer the NFL to college ball. Hopefully they will put one out soon.

Tiger Woods 08: Wow, this is like crack to me. I kept playing the 3 demo holes over and over and over. I'm definitely getting this game. Also made me want to back out to the driving range. Graphics are good, the controls are intuitive, but there are a lot of little extra things you can do as well. I can't say enough good things about this game, well the demo of it anyway.

On a side note, I have no idea how people can play true FPS games with the controller. I downloaded the BF2 demo that is out and tried to play online and everything just moved so slow, trying to line-up shots using the controller, it was totally painful. I guess you get used to it after a while, but I can't imagine it ever being as responsive as KbM. BF2 sucks anyway though, so no big loss there I guess.

Just thought I'd share my experience so far. Thanks for reading.

KT

Edit: Forgot about Ratchet & Clank, that game was awesome too. May pick that one up if I can find it cheap. reminded me of the good ole' console days.

Wasn't there a port of Enchanted Arms to the PS3? I heard mixed things about the port, but I played it on 360, and it was pretty good (but not remarkable). Other than that and Folklore, you're pretty much out of PS3-native RPGs. Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles will be out in the fall, but neither of those is very similar to Final Fantasy games (they are, however, good fun).

If you've got a BC-enabled PS3, I'd strongly recommend giving Persona 3: FES a whirl. It's easily the best JRPG I've played in a long, long time.

I tried the demo for Folklore and I found it rather bland and it was really more of an action game than an RPG in my opinion.

Took me a minute to figure out what BC was, but I think you mean Backwards Compatible, which I'm pretty sure mine is. I just looked at Persona 3 and it looks pretty cool I'll see if I can find it for cheap on eBay or somewhere. Thanks for the help!

Totally agree. It has some RPG-like characteristics, but it's in the same league as Marvel Ultimate Alliance, not Kingdom Hearts.

Enchanted Arms, IMHO, is worth a purchase if you can get it used for $15-$20.

As long as you don't have a 40gb PS3, you have BC of some sort. The game itself only runs $30 new, and it's a tremendous value at that price.

Other good stuff to look for would be FF-12, Rogue Galaxy, and Odin Sphere. Strategy RPGs (SRPGs) are also in the vogue these days, so you may want to consider Disgaea, Growlanser, and the like. And, of course, if you're a glutton for grinding, there's .hack and .hack//GU.

20GB here, so all good.

$30 new is cheaper than I was seeing it on eBay, so I'll have to check the local shops to see if it's there for the better price.

I'm definitely not a grinder, so I'll pass on, well whatever the heck that last game is you named there. I'll take a look at those others though to see if I can find them cheaply. I didn't even realize FF 12 was released, I thought the last one was an MMO of some sort, so thanks for that.

It's important to note that "Persona 3" and "Persona 3: FES" are two different games. P3F includes all of P3, plus new content and a new episode. P3, OTOH, had a very limited run, and thus costs more.

FF11 is an MMORPG. FF12 is very much an offline experience - and a rather amazing one at that.

Ah, ok, that makes sense looking at the auctions now.

I'm getting excited for FF12 now. Hope I can find it for a decent price. :D

Not sure why there's all the Enchanted Arms knocking in here... it's not a bad game if you quickly turn it to Japanese voices and subtitles :p.

Folklore is a fun game. I kinda stopped when I missed a folk to suck up, because I couldn't figure out which power to break the crystal with... then I figured it out and was too lazy to back track.

Ratchet and Clank is great... definitely recommend that one.

Eternal Sonata has annoying in-battle camera issues (mostly once the battle begins).

It doesn't look like Eternal sonata is coming for a while, and if it's true about the camera issues that could be a deal-breaker for me. I ran into camer issues afew times during some of the demos and in some of them it was so frustrating it ruined the entire experience.

The Ratchet & Clank demo was great. Reminded me of the good old Sonic days. Going to keep an eye out for that one.

This would be a solid rental, it came with my PS3 bundle. Fun game, but only took me 8.5 hours to beat. And that was on "Normal" difficulty.

You mention Dragon Quest VIII - Enix hand-picked Level 5 to do that game, and they are the ones who did Rogue Galaxy for the PS2. I haven't picked it up yet, but it's on my list.

Also, did you know your PS3 can play SACDs? ;)

I'm bidding on Drake's Fortune right now and if I can get it for what I bid or lower I'm happy, otherwise I guess I'll rent it. I really liked the feel of this game, even though I always swore I'd never play a console shooter.

Never heard of Rogue Galaxy, but I loved DQ VIII. If it's anything even remotely similar, it may be worth checking out.

I did not know that and I didn't even know what an SACD was until I Googled. Is there a noticeable difference compared to regular CDs? I mainly just listen to things on my MP3 player or computer anyway, so not sure how much I'd use it, plus I can't recall ever seeing an SACD anywhere, but still good to know.

Yeah, as long as you're forewarned about the length of Drake's Fortune and don't end up spending $60 (US, dunno what they charge up there) you'll probably enjoy it.
I had the same apprehensions about the shooting bit, but it worked out in the end. I guess they've learned to tweak the AI and such to make it doable :p

Yeah, that is one thing I noticed is the games for this system are insanely expensive. I got DMC4 for $30, which I think is decent and put a max bid of $40 on Drake's. Anything more than that is outrageous in my opinion.

Thanks for the link, it looks pretty sweet. All of this JRPG talk is making me a little nostalgic *sniff*.

I talked about the camera issue in Eternal Sonata when I downloaded the Trusty Bell (Japanese name for ES) demo off Japanese XBL. The issue with it is that the fight sequences are not your FF-esque menu-based combat. They're turn-based real-time move and attack. The problem is, the first turn during combat, the camera is facing parallel to your character and honestly, until you choose to attack, you have no idea where anything is. So for some of the few seconds where you're allowed to run and attack, you spend your time analyzing the fight and end up wasting some of your turn. I found it quite annoying when they simply could've had the camera use an overhead position.

That does sound very frustrating. I'm surprised there is no way to alter certain camera angles in some of these games.

I just won FF XII on eBay (less than $14 yay!) and it made me wonder if the PS2 games upscale on the PS3? I Googled a bit, but it was not clear whether it was truly upscaled or not and whether it actually makes a visible difference when playing the PS2 games.

Anyone have any experience comments on this?

Thanks,
KT
