I'm pretty sure the ones sold in the U.S. are built by American workers. Oops, i guess not, sorry.

I love my 2003 Passat, but VW needs to fix their dealer issues and work on their PR if they really want to move upmarket (ie phaeton and touraeg). I haven't run into any reliability issues yet but since I come from a family that owned 2 jeeps, its hard to imagine anything worse than those piles of junk :disgust:

But a class action suit will be very hard to get rolling and even if you suceed, will result in your lawyers getting rich and you getting a coupon for $500 off the next VW you buy. In other words, save your time and energy....

No, the Passats are all made in Germany and the Golf/Jetta/Beetle are mostly made in Mexico. Which is probably a reason why the reliability of those cars has gone down.

the germans are slacking off. if they think consumers will bypass these 'minor' issues,' their stupidity knows no bound.

(And good luck with your lawsuit, hopefully VW will be forced into doing the right thing)

Hey now, i'll gladly admit that i used to be a VW fanboy.

That all changed about 2 months ago when my 2002 VW Passat broke down twice (for the same problem), and then while being fixed the second time the dealer got into an accident with my car while one of his tech's took it for a joy ride.

Dont get me wrong, i love driving my passat, but i will never buy another VW.

lol

This is why I will never buy an Audi or a VW, despite being a huge fan of Audi's styling and fit-and-finish. My family owned an Audi 5000S back in the day and it was riddled with problems from day 1. A buddy of mine is another VW fanboy and his brand new passat has already needed to get its brakes (not just pads) replaced.

Sorry to hear about your problems. 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles is crazy. My 93 sentra that is admittedly leaking oil at a healthy rate doesn't go through nearly that much  I guess you managed to get the car before the infamous ignition coil problems?

I can add to this:

1. A friend's Golf consumes oil crazily just like what you described.

2. Another friend's Jetta VR6 also consumes oil but not as bad. It developed a transmission problem after a year and a half.

Thanks for all the support so far. I only wish I could cut my losses and get a second car, but with two kids and wife still in school, that would be out of question for at least couple of years. Actually, one of the main reasons I bought that POS in the first place, was because they peddled that 10/100,000 warranty as best in business, and it was the longest warranty (without buying additional coverage) offered at a time. Plus, the car was assembled in Germany, not Brazil and I thought that would make it last longer. Boy, was I wrong.

I am well aware of the stake trial lawyers have in a class-action suit, but I am running out of options. VW of America is notorious for treating it's customers like crap. In fact, I ran across an interesting piece written by a lawyer who specializes in lemon law and claims against car manufacturers, he listed top 10 manufacturers and how well they respond to customers claims. To my surprise, top two spots were held by GM and Chrysler. Guess who came in the dead last? Yup, VW...

I can't say this is representative, but having been to my Chevy dealer a couple times, I'd have to say they have pretty good service, I was kind of surprised since I prefer honda and toyotas. I drive a chevy prizm, a corolla clone built by toyota for GM, and I had a couple minor issues that I took it in for. I drove in my car in the morning and I got it back in a couple hours without fail.

It's a shame that GM passenger cars suck, if they were as good as hondas or toyotas, I'd seriously consider buying one.

I'm fairly knowledgeable about VW's, and your problem is by no means "common." Just because you found a dozen people with the same problem as you doesn't mean you have a class action lawsuit on your hand.

Intersetingly enough, Honda was listed at number 9, with the only company being worse is VW. However, you are not likely to experience the problems I and many others have, if you purchase Honda.

I know of my girlfriend's friend, she had a 2000 GOLF and it gave her nothing but problems and it had to be serviced a ton of times. She ended up trading it in for a Nissan truck. I just read an article on Yahoo I think about VW having tons of problems. They're now trying to get into the "luxury" market too.

VW's are pieces of crap. I would never buy one. They look great, and great interior, but people have tonnes of problems with them, even some peeps I know.

Boy, this thread really brings out the idiots, doesn't it? "I have 1 data point concerning VW's reliability, so I will extrapolate it to the 500,000 cars that VW sells annually worldwide." Well, while we're playing that retarded game, how about my coworker's four year old Toyota that needs a new transmission? Or my friend's Accord which has been in the shop more times than all of my cars combined? OMG I WIL NEVR BUY A ACCORD OR TYOTA TEHY SUXORS!
rolleye.gif
Lets continue this game a little, because the 11 or 12 VW's that my family has owned have all been great cars. Therefore all VW's are great cars.

I will freely admit that VW has its share of problems, but all of you idiots basing your opinion on one experience should shut your mouth. Comments like, "My friend's Golf burns oil so VW's are unreliable" only serve to show the rest of us your limited understanding of statistical methods.

This link says that it affects more cars then that. Our beetle just got one replaced and the dealer had the nerve to tell us that this is not a problem and it was the first one he has seen. Bullsh!t. VW does suck and I am tired of their excuses and lies. The dealers are the worse and corp VW doesn't give a rats ass. They will not make an effort to help you in anyway. I feel sorry for anyone of you that are out of warranty.

VW SUCKS VW SUCKS VW SUCKS VW SUCKS VW SUCKS

I'm completely aware of this problem, and I understand the implications of it. In fact, bad press is good because it leads to better service and better quality products. But the coil packs have nothing to do with leaking oil, and you missed the point of my post anyway.

*edit* wow, what a constructive post, optoman.

I am not sure what makes you "fairly knowledgeable", but unlike me, you obviously havn't done any research. I have NEVER stated that I do have a premise for a class-action suit, I am only EXPLORING the possibilty. If the vehicle is under warranty yet the company refuses or is unable to rememdy the problem to customers satisfaction, then perhaps I will be able to prove you wrong.

actually i understood your point. but your argument is not better, just because you had good experiences doesn't prove anything either.

but if you have enough people posting bad experiences you can conclude that there might be an issue here. then you see a 530K recall and you can further conclude that problems do exist.

Ha ha ha ha ha

Don't even get me started on how crappy VW is. :|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|:|

That's a good one when you say:

VW won't change and they will still suck. Tell them to recall all the coils from the VR6 models from around 98. Oh its not a problem, they like to crack and be replaced at $450 a piece. I got give credit were credit is due, they do have a quality replacement for the coil pack. It lasts exactly 14 months, 2 months out of the 1 year warranty. This is now the fourth one I am going on. Its like clockwork, 14 months, the engine light comes on, go to the dealer, replaces coil pack and likes to charge me the $79 diagnostic fee even though I can tell them to just replace the coil pack. They suck beyond belief.
