Thinking about getting a PS2, but which one is the best to get?

Well this Summer I have this urge to play games I can't get on PC,
Games I am planning on getting are so far:

* Gran Turismo 4
* Tekken 5
* Metal Gear...
* Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
.... and more console only games.

I haven't purchased a PlayStation since the PS 1 days back in the late 90's since then I have been gaming on PC till last year when I was done due to lack of interest, so I decided that since PS 2 consoles are dirt cheap these days I am going to get me one and have some fun with it.
Now I was weighing my choice in between a Refurbished PS 2 non-slim + 1 game at game stop's website for like $ 89.99 and a refurbished or new PS2 slim for $ 109.99 / $ 129.99 respectively.

Also if the PS2 Slim is the way to go, I would appreciate if I am pointed to any ongoing deals on them 🙂

So which one should I go for? And if there are any specific model numbers I should be on the lookout for.

Also I am planning on getting an RCA video out to VGA adapter so that I can hook the PS 2 to my 22" LCD, any recommendations?

Thanks for the input 😀

I don't think I could bring myself to buy a used one. I went through 3 brand new PS1s due to their drives wearing out so easily. PS2 couldn't be that much better.

Get the free version built inside every PS3 instead.

Screw all that, get a used one off ebay or something. I bought one for $47 off ebay, supposed had a disc read error, but when I got it, it was completely fine. Works fine to this day, even with backup games.

How many of the PS3's features are free, and how many contribute to the $600 price? 😉

I would pay the extra $20 to get the slim, because if you get the non-slim you could get one that has had the disc read error "fixed," and it could come back.

I have the slim, and when I opened the box I was blown away by how small it is.

Seeing the the Slim version is leading in the polls, do you guys think that it would be too hard to get a brand new PS 2 Slim for $100 or below anywhere around the net ?

And on top of that can someone tell me why on earth people on Ebay are paying more than retail price for a regular new PS2 Slim???
WTF is wrong with people?

I believe I saw it on sale at Target for $100 at some point.... I dunno. Good luck.

Remember, the slim one has a built-in broadband adapter- let that factor into your decision. I have to recommend the new one- it's so awesome knowing that you can take something back to the store when it messes up. My first Gamecube had a loud whiny fan that drove me nuts- I felt bad, but I was glad I could return it to BB where nobody would hassle me about its playability, and I didn't have to ship it anywhere.

I played GT4 for a while (till my ex moved out and took her PS2 with her)! My favorite cars were the M5 and the Elan. I tried to love the Ford GT, but the brakes are so utterly horrid : (

silver is nice .... but I returned it because the memory card and controller (wired/wireless) plug sticks out of the unit.

The silver memory card, I can get .... but I've yet to find a silver wireless transmitter and that just takes away from the "wow" factor ... so I'm going to go with the standard black one.

I got the slim because I just wanted to play some classics (FF9, Saga Frontier) and didnt feel like modding.
I need to check out that God Of War. Everyone says its the greatest thing since Super Mario Brothers.

Hand me $600 I wouldn't mind blowing your money away 😉

The cheaper one is $500 and doesn't remove any essential features. This isn't like the Xbox 360 where you get a POS without spending the extra $100, the $500 PS3 is actually worth something compared to the premium.

I have to agree, getting the PS3 seems like it would be the better choice if I wanted to play PS2 games and didn't already own a PS2. I wouldn't get the $600 one though. The $500 version is just as good, the features removed to hardly matter at all. Flash card reader is useless to me and the built-in Wi-Fi only matters if you're connecting to a router, you can still use wireless controllers. The hard drive is all I'd care about.

That's what pisses me off about them discontinuing the 20GB version, the $100 difference was nice.

I've had my fat PS2 for years (I got it when I was a sophomore in high school, I'm about to graduate from college with my bachelor's) never gave me problems. /brag
