think osx is pretty.. its got nuthin' on XP

urbantechie2 for wb3.. econsole and coolinfo and du meter on desktop, vnc into linux samba server, qws3270 into mainframe at work
 
That looks better than most Windows desktops I see, but still looks like crap IMO.

EDIT: Oh, and does anyone else get reminded of Mandrake when looking at XP's buttons in ie?
 
I prefer a totally black screen with a white, blinking cursor 😛

BTW, with *NIX you can easily create a WM which will look identical to the skin you're using 🙂
 
I think that's pretty ugly looking, but maybe it's just me. The default XP theme looks better than that and it's really gay =)

OS X also has that whole BSD kernel thing that XP lacks.
 
Im gonna hafta go with the ugly crowd on this one.

Transparency effect and stuff is good and all, but it doesn't automatically make something look good.
 
Sorry, but that has nothing on OSX 🙂.

I skin couldn't change Windows to be able to do the stuff Aqua can, like how Windows change size to fit a new dialogue box, etc.
 
Ugh! I hate IE6. I should smack the person that put it on this machine. I thought that picture looked small. Thankfully my browser shrinks it to wear my eyes out. Anyhow, Mac OS X is much more beautiful (in multiple ways) than XP, even in that pic. Did Microsoft move the minimize, maximize/whatever_the_fsck_that_is_called, and close buttons from the right to the left? Or did you do that? If they did, WHY? And this is a complaint with 90% of the gui's out there right now, why put all 3 of them next to each other? How many times do you accidentally hit the X when you mean minimize? I know I did it a lot. And where is sloppy focus? I like my window focus following my mouse damnit! Both of those are solved by using blackbox, but it has its own problems 😛
 
Some would have you believe that Apple is the epitome of interface excellence. But Microsoft has been the real interface innovator for the past 5 years or so. Microsoft's Usability Labs have done some incredible research in usability testing, and have overturned some commonly held misconceptions about what "good" interfaces should look like. If you follow this subject at all, you would already know this.

Windows bashers need to lay off and pursue another subject, like Product Activation. Eye candy is simply not the same thing as a good "interface."

You sit 9/10 "average" users down at a computer, and they just GET the Windows user interface. It works, and people don't need to read a manual to figure it out.

Eye candy does NOT equate to a better computer. Apple knows this, but hopes you do not.

I never said this. Infact I have problems with their interface also. But they seem to know what they are doing since Microsoft liked the design enough to steal it. Again 😉

Please, give us some links. Id love to see some actual innovation from that company. Id also like to see what "good" interfaces arent "good" anymore since Microsoft proved them "bad".

Its been done to death. I like product activation. Piraters shoul get what they deserve. And I gave my honest opinion about the desktop here. The original poster was asking for flames and I thought most of the posters here have been pretty nice so far.

Actually, they have increased usability recently. They added a good command line interface, something Microsoft has yet to do.
 
the console on the desktop is "econsole" and "coolinfo". the linux session is a vnc session. the transparency is from wb3 and does eat cpu, but thats just for the screenshot 🙂 turn off the transparency and the interface is fast as hell.. no desktop icons seems to help a lot, but then again i have a 1.2tbird and 512mb, so there is tons of spare resources

There is plenty to call ugly there, I just have different tastes than you. No biggie.
