2. A smaller start menu by default. After you install it you click the start button for the 1st time and it takes up a 1/4 of the screen! :p
3. Less of this clumping/expanding bs, where it groups related windows and hides unused tray icons... it just adds clicks.

You get the virtual desktops with the plus package.

i think it'd be super cool if it had a unix command line like osx does... but something tells me that's not going to happen :p

you don't even need that... it's one of those "power toys" that you can download.

PowerToys 4 XP, use the "virtual desktops manager" (550KB)

Well what do you mean by a "unix command line"? Do you mean something like a csh/tcsh/bash shell? Do you just mean things like which/grep/diff?

You can always get the MKS Toolkit which gives these tools to a windows platform.MKS Software.

We use that at work and its awesome. The command line in Windows is seriously lacking compared to the *nix world.

4. OH GOD YES. The XP explorer bar sucks, should've left it the way it was in 2k, with the option of turning and and off all that sh!t they have there now.

I'll add my own:

A GUI that is not designed for farking retards. Even with the skins you can't get rid of all the crap.

Overall, 2k owns XP big time.

I like XP better because you can skin it. This alone will make me stick with XP.
It's called windowblinds.

I hate WindowBlinds. It's so slow and bulky.

Plenty of money to make it worthwhile.

dude, XP was built on NT. Not NT 4 NT but 2k NT - which was mostly rewritten. So they did chuck the old code at one point...

They just did that, Yossarian; they EOL'd the 9x/DOS core after ME. XP is NT based.

Well NT was developed in the early 90's (as opposed to the 80's with the DOS core). So its not exactly new. But then again, point to an OS that isn't a decade old.

It's nothing compared to the KDE virtual desktop. That Virtual Desktop in powertoys is more of a nuisance than a tool.

Okay okay, BeOS is younger than 10 years old. But how many people actually use it. I mean, I know of a bunch of alternative OS's out there that are young (Athene comes to mind). But they are not in widespread use. The big ones out there (Windows of any flavor, *nix of any flavor, *BSD of any flavor and that includes OSX, and MacOS) are all at least a decade old.

But oh well.

unix is from the 60s and is still more powerful with a greater feature set than windows. but windows is consumerific.

KDE 3.0 for *nix has it too.

Damn Windows is just missing out on all the latest gadgets and gizmos. ;)

1. Minimize to tray

2. explorer........ability to view ?Common Task Area? (or ?Webview? as it was called before) and ?Folders-bar? at the same time

3. explorer........show/hide button for hidden files

4. explorer........show/hide button for file extensions (or maybe ability to edit the file extension und properties)

5. explorer........move all files without prompts and just report errors at the end.

6. explorer........ability to edit ?Common Task Area? for one folder (type of folder).

7. allow users arrange/drag and drop windows on the taskbar in whatever order they want

8. internet explorer??..ability to disable pop-up windows (internally/automatically launched windows) or at least ask before opening them

I just send the above list to the windows team ... :D

I don't see why #8 couldn't be implemented with ease. I have yet to see useful popups that I did not initiate first. I think that we would have to ask the mozilla team for that one.

A safemode with the ability to unistall crap.

I put Roxio EZCD creator on the machine, rebooted, locked up the machine. Couldn't get it to boot into "normal" windows. It came up every time under safemode, but I couldn't uninstall the software. Kept getting a windows error "sorry, this feature is not available in safemode" WTF!?!?!?!

Had it happen with other programs as well.

Virtual desktops are one of those features that you don't think you need until you get used to it, then you can't live without it (like Mozilla's tabbed browsing). It's very cool.

Another nifty feature is Gnome's (or was it Enlightenment's) ability to "iconify" a running application. Similar to the system tray, but better.
