1. Minimize to tray Trayit (freeware)

2. Better Dialogs (open,save,browse).....they just suck without xfiles dialog

3. explorer........show/hide button for hidden files

4. explorer........better side bar, the old webview was better then the xp sidebar, serious lack of imagination here.

5. explorer........move all files without prompts and just report errors at the end.

6. single icon cache which can be alter with ease.

7. allow users arrange/drag and drop windows on the taskbar in whatever order they want

8. explorer........ability to edit ?Common Task Area? for one folder (type of folder).

9. Different levels so programs don't fight over "always on top feature".

10. explorer........show/hide button for file extensions (or maybe ability to edit the file extension und properties)

11. internet explorer??..ability to disable pop-up windows (internally/automatically launched windows) or at least ask before opening them

12. Virtual desktops....actually a powertoy feature and most power users probably run powertoys.

13. Maybe forget all that explorer crap and just put in a full fledge file manager....is that asking to much ?

I'll add more when I think of them.

The code has to support that, not the OS

2. Better Dialogs (open,save,browse).....they just suck without xfilesdialog.

They seem to work for most of the world just fine.

3. explorer........show/hide button for hidden files

most people just have it on or off they dont keep switching

4. explorer........better side bar, the old webview was better then the xp sidebar, serious lack of imagination here.

how would you do it?

5. explorer........move all files without prompts and just report errors at the end.

use xcopy, it can do everything you want without prompts

6. single icon cache which can be alter with ease.

It would be soo big to load up, not very efficient.

I'll add more when I think of them.

Agreed. I love WinAmp just for that feature alone.

2. Better Dialogs (open,save,browse).....they just suck without xfilesdialog.
Don't understand this.

3. explorer........show/hide button for hidden files
I don't enable the Hidden attribute very often. I'm happy with the way it is. Going to file properties is simple enough. BTW, how would you use the "Show" button when you can't select the hidden file? ;)

4. explorer........better side bar, the old webview was better then the xp sidebar, serious lack of imagination here.
I'm quite happy with it already.

5. explorer........move all files without prompts and just report errors at the end.
Use CLI.

Maybe add something like Shift+drag or Ctrl+drag (or file copy and paste) to do that. BTW, I recall that such feature has already been there for a while. Give it a try.

6. single icon cache which can be alter with ease.
Don't understand this one either.

I wish that Windows XP washes my dishes and does the laundry for me also. :D

What they really neeed to do is chunk the old code and start all over again. They keep reusing old crap and mixing it with new stuff, everything is so scattered and jittery. It is no wonder that so many computer nerds go Linux. But most of the world is stuck with Windows so the least they could do is make it decent. I use it and it works, but they could improve it, especially for the prices they sell it, just multiply that by all the people who get computers, usually all start with windows. Plenty of money to make it worthwhile.

joemamma i think there is a program out there that allows that. It should be very simple for them to add it, and better be in the next version of windows.

1. good idea
2. also good idea
3. not needed
4. OH GOD YES. The XP explorer bar sucks, should've left it the way it was in 2k, with the option of turning and and off all that sh!t they have there now.

I'll add my own:

A GUI that is not designed for farking retards. Even with the skins you can't get rid of all the crap.

Overall, 2k owns XP big time.

I like XP better because you can skin it. This alone will make me stick with XP.

They just did that, Yossarian; they EOL'd the 9x/DOS core after ME. XP is NT based.

Well NT was developed in the early 90's (as opposed to the 80's with the DOS core). So its not exactly new. But then again, point to an OS that isn't a decade old.

XP should have

1. no activation requirement
2. an easy way to uninstall messenger and WMP

If it even had the first I would recommend it to everyone I know. As it is, I use it but don't recommend it.

#2 is supposed to be a feature of Service Pack 1 for Windows XP. As for #1, you need to get an education or enterprise edition to avoid product activation.

Gotta hide those windows when someone walks in. ;)
2. Better Dialogs (open,save,browse).....they just suck without xfiles dialog
Too many directories. ;)
3. explorer........show/hide button for hidden files
Too many extra steps to get to those special folders. ;)
4. explorer........better side bar, the old webview was better then the xp sidebar, serious lack of imagination here.
Going to your bookmark/favorite webpages shouldn't be a hassle. ;)
5. explorer........move all files without prompts and just report errors at the end.
I hate having to 30,000 files too. ;)
6. single icon cache which can be alter with ease.
Yes, the ability to mark the best ones with a different icon is a good idea. ;)
7. allow users arrange/drag and drop windows on the taskbar in whatever order they want
I hate it when I close a wrong window because of all the pop-up ads. :|
I'll add more when I think of them.
Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

XP should have:

1. Virtual desktops a la XWindows
2. A smaller start menu by default. After you install it you click the start button for the 1st time and it takes up a 1/4 of the screen! :p
3. Less of this clumping/expanding bs, where it groups related windows and hides unused tray icons... it just adds clicks.

I think they figure that once you click on the taskbar you wouldn't be doing anything else. . . but taking up the whole screen would just be annoying . . . and they figure 1/4th is good.
