I work in a computer store so I hear them all but the most obnoxious ones include.

Calling computer case a hard drive or a modem.
The people that don't understand what they need Virus scanners for or why viruses exist, you can't explain it to them because they can't connect why people would do such things.

And people who have ancient computers running Windows 95 and they want to add USB devices more memory (over 64MB), install more software, or have filled their hard drives up to the brim and can't f-ing figure out why their computer keeps crashing.

When someone looses some important file and I ask," Could it be on a backup disk?" and they reply, "Backup?". Yes people, you really should backup your important data. really

Calling the hard drive "Winchester" ...

Well, at least these people mostly have a real life ... something that us geeks don't have. ;)

1) "Do you have the internet on your computer?" - Yeah, I have every single webpage known to man on my hard drive...

2) "I don't want AMD because I hear it's not compatible with software...

3) When people think that "installing a program" is the same as "downloading a program"

ElFenix,

You get the same response usually if you say RAM, etc though, I think you know what I mean with the Hard drive space versus RAM discussion :)

I understand their confusion, but its just such a pain in the neck to try to explain to a person with limited computer knowledge that the memory you're talking about isn't the one where they save their Word documents to and in fact the memory you're talking about actually is temporary storage and goes away everytime you turn off or reboot the computer.

Here's one from the old days that some people might remember:

People who had 5 1/4" Floppy disks and 3 1/2" floppy disks would call the 5 1/4" ones "floppy disks" (or soft disks!) and the 3 1/2" floppy disks - "hard disks" ... Since they were made out of hard plastic. That always annoyed the hell out of me :)

The term I always used to use when I worked doing IT support was "Carbon Unit Error" ... Most people never knew what you meant, but the tech guys usually got it. :)

This reminds me of a horrible RR commercial that's been playing in my area lately. It's a kid's birthday party, and he has a new computer. Whatever he's downloading is barely moving. So of course his grandmother says to the dad , oh, you must have cheaped out on the processor, and the uncle tells him he needs more ram, and then they all laugh at the dad when he tells them that he doesn't use a roadrunner high speed connection, we use dialup! God, I hate that commercial.

Haha never heard that one. :)

The thing I hate most is people who bang on their keyboards. Everytime I go to the library, you can hear people really punching those keys, as if a light tap isn't good enough to get the letter on the screen. TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAAAAAPPPP!

When someone tells me that their computer is broken or it isn't doing what they want, I just tell them that it must be a "user error." They still don't seem to understand.

Been there done that...had a heated discussion with a customer last night who also could not understand that concept...I am a firm believer some people where never meant to use a PC :D

You mean that there are some people who are never meant to use a CPU?
Or there are some people who are never meant to use a hard drive?

Not using tab, shift+tab, and Enter to fill out a form. Instead they type one line, then use the mouse to click on the next line. Type another line and then use the mouse to click on the next line or a button, ie logging into an account.

Also to add one of my stories, I recently built a computer for some people that I used to go to church with who are extremely non-technical. So I set it up at their house, installed AOL and some of the proggies that they use, and turned it off and went home. Next time I came over to teach them how to burn CDs and such, they told me that they hadn't used it since the last time I had been there because it wouldn't turn on. Well to make a long story short, the PSU switch in the back was flipped to off, but they were only using the buttons in the front, and they couldn't get the thing to turn on.

The most annoying thing!!
I was trying to help a person over the phone and everytime I would tell her to click on (whatever) she would always say "right click or left click" even after I told her that we would not be right clicking at any time.
after the last time I told her to center click, she said I dont have a center clicker. I told her that was the problem and she said oh and hung up

I know I'm doomed when they touch the mouse with their fingers only & don't rest their hand on it...

My father in law thinks double clicking is clicking the left and right mouse button at the same time.... it's really annoying, and he won't listen to me when i try to explain it

i have a good friend who types only with both index fingers, and he types about half as fast as i do (i type around 100wpm), which ain't too bad!

The other day I had a lady ask what does she need to upgrade to make her computer a little faster. More ram or more memory.....

You'd think he'd be open to learning new things.

I know what that's like. My parents refuse to let me show them how to put a new ink cartridge in their printer. They just ask me to do it every single time, even though there are instructions with big pictures included so even illiterates could figure it out.

Also, this guy at my work doesn't understand what it means when the monitor is in standby mode, he thinks the computer is off so he presses the power button and shuts it off. Then he presses it again and it starts up and he has to go through scandisk because of the bad shutdown. I've tried explaining to him that all he needs to do is move the mouse or press a key and the monitor will come on, but he doesn't get it.
