Things that lower test scores

The other day I was listening to the radio and they were discussing various things that can lower test scores, I was really surprised at the #1 item being classical music.

Does anyone know why that would be? Have evidence to support this? I always thought that listening to classical was good for studying and such.

Anyone else know of things that aren't good to do when studying for tests/before tests?

It's not the type of music, but listening to music in general as it's a distraction.

I'd assume classical would be the most distracting, as the complexity of much classical music results in it demanding your full attention.

If you listen to classical music you get addicted to it and stop concentrating -> less studying -> lower test grade. Simple! :D

Presumably it's bad because, compared to regular studying, it's distracting.

However, I find that when I study while listening to music, I can study for a longer period of time, even if I'm less efficient.

Not studying? Or staying up all night?

I would say those are pretty bad, worse than classical music. I think jazz, chill, downbeat, etc. might be better suited to studying anyway. :p

But don't they suggest classical music to pregnant women for listening?

IIRC, there was a study that indicated listening to Mozart before a test led to higher scores.

I think that the radio station you were listening to probably doesn't play classical music and they want you to listen to them while you're studying.

Interesting, the only way I was able to prepare for exams or study in general was with music on.

IIRC Classical music increases brain activity. My guess is that it is not good to listen to while studying because you are amping up the activity to an already active(hopefully) brain. I would also assume this is why preggo chicks and people about to take a test SHOULD listen to classical music because its gets the brain waves going when they are not active.

I think it is like pre-game warmups. They help get the blood going before the game but you wouldn't want to do a layup drill in the middle of the game.

Any distraction DURING the test will make it more difficult.
But listening to classical during study time or off time has already been shown (many times) to lead to increased test scores.
