edit: don't forget, if you ask were to ask random Americans what a feather would do if it were released 3 feet above the ground on the moon, a significant percentage of them would reply "it would float away." And a significant number would point out, "we don't know, because we've never been to the moon."

not enough information. we need the wind speed and direction to calculate that

We're watching part of the BBC's documentary "Planet Earth." It's a really fantastic piece. These are things I've heard so far today in this 10th grade classroom:

Emperor Penguins on screen are shuffling around with their eggs under their feet:

Student - "Is it cold there?"

Me - "Yes, very."

Student - "Then why do they live there? Stupid penguins."

Another instance

Student - "Is there really *an animal called a 'Moose'?!"

EDIT: for my own typo.

Do these kids take the short bus to school?

I am guessing this is a classroom full of city kids. They don't know much about animals at all except bushy tailed rats and sky rats.

Fixed.

I dunno what else to tell you. I'll be re-telling the "fictional moose" story for years to come though, of that I am sure.

It doesn't surprise me a bit, especially if these are "city kids." Don't forget, a lot of kids have never even seen a cow. Most zoos don't have meese ( :p ), so they probably haven't seen them either. And, since they don't have the good cartoons on television any more (Rocky & Bullwinkle), you've lost that avenue as well.

Unfortunately, some of these kids may grow up to be substitute teachers :(

Fixed. :p

Yes this is how most young ones are. My own sister is this stupid. She loves the alcohol and partying and does not know a damn thing about anything else. I hate talking to her you have to speak slower and explain all the "big" words.

And no she is not a retard. Just lazy and uneducated.

Well, I knew it was cold there, but I still called the penguins stupid when I watched that one.
"Look at me! I'm a bird, but I can't fly! I guess I'll go live somewhere where it's colder than crap so there's something distinguishing about me!"

No, by then its too late. The quality of the 1st through 9th grade is what has diminished.

The comment about why Penguins stay in the cold is not that stupid, it's a good question. I don't think Planet Earth mentioned protection from other predators as the reason.

hmmm, but why are the penguins so stupid?

seriously, I think I've known about penguins guarding eggs for more than half my life (son of biology professor-go figure). regardless, I made that very same comment to my GF the other day while watching planet earth. It was in jest; perhaps the students meant it that way as well?

Although...I have tutored city kids before--and this only makes me wish I had recorded some gems....

If kids think that Joan of Ark was Noah's wife then I'm really not surprised by this.

Sad but true.
