edit: don't forget, if you ask were to ask random Americans what a feather would do if it were released 3 feet above the ground on the moon, a significant percentage of them would reply "it would float away." And a significant number would point out, "we don't know, because we've never been to the moon."

We're watching part of the BBC's documentary "Planet Earth." It's a really fantastic piece. These are things I've heard so far today in this 10th grade classroom:
Emperor Penguins on screen are shuffling around with their eggs under their feet:
Student - "Is it cold there?"
Me - "Yes, very."
Student - "Then why do they live there? Stupid penguins."
Another instance
Student - "Is there really *an animal called a 'Moose'?!"
EDIT: for my own typo.

I love the planet earth series, especially the BBC version. David Attenborough > Sigorney Weaver
I am guessing this is a classroom full of city kids. They don't know much about animals at all except bushy tailed rats and sky rats.

It doesn't surprise me a bit, especially if these are "city kids." Don't forget, a lot of kids have never even seen a cow. Most zoos don't have meese (), so they probably haven't seen them either. And, since they don't have the good cartoons on television any more (Rocky & Bullwinkle), you've lost that avenue as well.

Unfortunately, some of these kids may grow up to be substitute teachers![]()

Apparently the quality of the 10th grade has greatly diminished since I was in high school.

No, by then its too late. The quality of the 1st through 9th grade is what has diminished.
