Things looking up for me? [blog.anandtech.com]

Well as some of you know my university years have had their ups and downs. Academically things were great, I did well and eventually found myself in a major that I not only enjoyed but was really good at (computer science). Socially it has been pretty much a disaster, and on a personal level I have not been especially happy a lot of the time.

Well last Wednesday I sat my last exam (ever) and as much as I enjoyed the student lifestyle, I'm happy to be moving on. On Thursday I packed up all of my belongings and began the 1200km drive (plus 3 hour boat ride) to get to the city of my new job (Auckland). On Sunday I moved all of my stuff into a pretty nice house where I'm living with one of my best friends, a guy who I have known since before high school.

On Monday I began my new job and it's really great. I'm developing software in Silverlight/WCF/RIA. I haven't got a "real" project yet, so for the past couple of days I have been paid to sit in my large, private office and study. The company is basically throwing resources at me - if I want any tools, books, hardware, etc then I just chuck them onto the company credit card (unless they're over $500, in which case I need to justify it first but will almost certainly get it anyway). This is my first "professional" job so having a boss who isn't a complete tight-ass is new to me :)

So at the moment I'm pretty happy, and excited to see what this job/career brings. The city looks interesting (never lived here) and there's heaps to explore. I'm much closer to my family (2 hour drive, compared to 13 hours plus a boat ride before) and have lots of friends in this city.

No, you're still a fucktard and that likely won't change. Things will never look up for you.

You need to thank the mod who gave you a warning, because had I seen this first, it would have been time off. -Admin DrPizza

Congrats. :) May the good things in your life flow into your style of posting and interacting with people IRL.

But you're still stuck in Oz, Jr.
So no... Things are not looking up for you.

Congrats - Auckland is beautiful! I may try to move and live there with the girlfriend for a few years if one of my many crappy Internet venture takes off and allows me to.

Sounds awesome. Someone else here is in Auckland. Is it your brother?
No, I think Mr Pedantic is.
Oh em gee, when did GA get back.
Today :p
Congrats man! More photo opportunities?
Probably the biggest downside to this change. The South Island has so much more in terms of scenery and natural beauty than where I am now. But that doesn't mean there isn't heaps to see up here, so something different for sure.

Congrats! Too bad the job is still in that socialist hell hole you call an island.

It's nice when you don't have to dread going to work. I feel sorry for all the people that have jobs they hate.

Congrats man, hopefully things improve socially for you as well. Just cuz you're an asshole on ATOT doesn't mean I hate you in real life...:)

You're in Auckland? Damnit time to escape!

Re. photo opportunities yes there would be somewhat less natural landscapes but on the flip side more city. I do realise it may not be your thing. As spots tho there are always the top of the mountaint like Mt Eden and One Tree Hill, should give some opportunit for great city views. Same as driving alon Tamaki drive and looking towards the city centre, especially at night. Another decent spot might be the rose gardens in parnell, especially since the roses should be blooming now. Waterfront and associated marinas should have some nice boats to get photos off.

Plus you can always go outside of Auckland. Piha, Muriway with their black sand beaches and dunes could be good places. For longer trips the drive to and from Coromandel along the coast is pretty nice or if you got time to do a 500km trip one way Cape Reinga and 90 mile beach are much closer than from the South island :p

Thanks for the tips. I'm actually from the North Island originally (Tauranga), so I know some of it fairly well, particularly the Coromandel region. I have never visited the far north, so that's on my list.
