Well as some of you know my university years have had their ups and downs. Academically things were great, I did well and eventually found myself in a major that I not only enjoyed but was really good at (computer science). Socially it has been pretty much a disaster, and on a personal level I have not been especially happy a lot of the time.
Well last Wednesday I sat my last exam (ever) and as much as I enjoyed the student lifestyle, I'm happy to be moving on. On Thursday I packed up all of my belongings and began the 1200km drive (plus 3 hour boat ride) to get to the city of my new job (Auckland). On Sunday I moved all of my stuff into a pretty nice house where I'm living with one of my best friends, a guy who I have known since before high school.
On Monday I began my new job and it's really great. I'm developing software in Silverlight/WCF/RIA. I haven't got a "real" project yet, so for the past couple of days I have been paid to sit in my large, private office and study. The company is basically throwing resources at me - if I want any tools, books, hardware, etc then I just chuck them onto the company credit card (unless they're over $500, in which case I need to justify it first but will almost certainly get it anyway). This is my first "professional" job so having a boss who isn't a complete tight-ass is new to me
So at the moment I'm pretty happy, and excited to see what this job/career brings. The city looks interesting (never lived here) and there's heaps to explore. I'm much closer to my family (2 hour drive, compared to 13 hours plus a boat ride before) and have lots of friends in this city.
