A good color printer (not a crummy free dell one)

A fan
A comfy desk chair

Just from looking around my room at stuff I would hate not having

Brita FILTER!
MP3 player for walking to class (very useful =))
Laptop?
Good headphones
Sandals/slippers for showers
Storage crates (put underneath bed)
FRIDGE (yes and then your room will become the alcohol room)
Floor lamps (central lighting usually sux)
Hampers

you can be tested for using it and it requires smoking for the most part.

To filter the cigarette butts out of the beer from all the half-empty's around the dorm. Or you could use a spaghetti strainer, which would be cheaper.

The common sense to not get shiitfaced every night.
The morals to not rape the chick passed out in the other room after the other 435 guys raped her b/c someone spiked her drink AND took vids of it all.
The good luck to not get an STD from that chick from the other night that was in your room...or was it the stairwell?
The common sense to stay the hell away from drugs. Not counting alcohol and aspirin, of course.
The hopes that four years passes quickly.
The smarts to know that college is just high school with better looking women and that 99% of those folks you'll never see again. Just like HS.

Get in, have a little fun, get out. Without a police record or failing grades, and you will have accomplished your goal. Good luck, Jim.

wow you need to chill out a bit.

I would agree with his advice actually. So many people are idiots in college.

A good memory stick, they have replaced floppies (most computers at colleges are newer, and so won't have a floppy, though some may have ZIP).
Wait until after you get there for a semester to buy a laptop. Your perception of what you need may change.
A TV tuner card is only useful if you don't have a roommate. A roommate will almost certainly not want to use a computer as a TV and so there will be one in your room.

Even if I have a roomate/TV, what attracted to me to a tuner card would be the ability to record shows so as to not waste time on things like LOST during the week and then enjoy them on the weekend.

Learn how to manage your time.

That's the biggest advice I can offer you. It IS possible to have fun at college and get your work done. Ignore MichaelD's pessimism as I can assure you what he said is very exaggerated, especially if you're going to a good school. Enjoy your time at college, your college years have the potential to be amazing.

Make sure you get your work done, it's easy to get distracted. If you get your sh!t done, you can have plenty of fun.

Also, go in with a good mindset. If you go to college thinking it's gonna suck and you can't wait to get out, etc. then you probably won't have much fun. Go in expecting to have some of the best times of your life but don't forget that college DOES require work.

This was an interesting topic to post, something for myself to look at as I will also be heading off in the fall to college. BTW, where are you going?

What do you suggest?
TV tuner card?
Termpurpedic topper for an uncomfortable bed?
Keychain flash memory?
etc....

Posts like these make me realize just how different life has become from only ten years ago. I was heading off to college in 1994, and having a computer was a big thing back then. I remember buying a powerPC because Apple had a computer store at college. What a fvcking waste.

I couldn't watch TV in my room because we only had cable in the main parlor. It forced the dorm to come together to watch popular TV shows. 100 people in a room watching the simpsons and the start of futurama. There'd be a bunch of us watching jeopardy. IT was a cool thing.

But I still wished I had a TV in my room back then. Of course, I tapped the cable line and had cable for a year before I was busted...
