What did the governor have to do with anything in the story? Hey Sandy grats on the news that Canada is pulling out of Kyoto.

They can dish it out but they can't take the heat that comes with their extreme ideology.

Brownback is a fundamentalist religious fanatic, and religion is almost always anti-free thought and free speech.

Sullivan received a scolding at school and was ordered to send Brownback an apology letter. She said Prinicipal Karl R. Krawitz even suggested talking points for the letter she was supposed to turn in Monday.

ahahah now that's pathetic

i expect students to talk shit, i expect the gov's office to comment back, but the principal suggesting talking points - lol.

The Shawnee Mission East senior was taking part in a Youth in Government program last week in Topeka, Kan., when she sent out a tweet from the back of a crowd of students listening to Brownback's greeting. From her cellphone, she thumbed: "Just made mean comments at gov. brownback and told him he sucked, in person (hash)heblowsalot."

She SHOULD be reprimanded by the school. This is not how schools should train people to act, and such behavior while at a school function should not be allowed. She is in a government class. I do not care if she was disparaging Obama, Bush, or anyone in between. That is inappropriate behavior in class.

I cannot believe people here think this is acceptable behavior for schools to install in children.

If she was tweeting in class then it's the school's problem. If not then they should butt out.

Brownback was an idiot for making a big deal out of this, if his staff had just ignored this then nobody would have known about this girls's tweet. Now it's national news.

She was tweeting in class, the article says the girl even tweeted that info. Brownback's office let the school know the girl was both tweeting in class and obviously not learning anything from her politics class.

Nothing wrong was done by anyone but the girl.

Irrelevant. She was there participating in a school function for her government class. She acted improperly.

Do you want this to be an acceptable practice for schools to allow?

that is not what is being bitched about. what the ruckus is about is the content of the tweet and not when and she has every right to voice her opinion no matter when it was posted. if she had praised brownback it would never have made it this far.

she is sopposed to give a letter apologizing. she is refusing.

I hope she does not get in more trouble for it. But good for her for standing up for herself and her rights.

and yes the governor is a fucking idiot. now he made himself look like he is against free speech and has a issue with kids.

Him being an idiot or not is irrelevant. I have no idea if he is or is not one. His actions do not affect me at all, so I have not bothered to follow them.

However, the court system has ruled students do not have the right to free speech while engaging in a school function. There was a famous case about kids holding up pro pot smoking signs during a school function and losing their free speech battle.

Could you please point out where BRownback is "making a big deal out" of this.

What she chose to say cannot be the problem, therefore, a letter of apology is not necessary. Usage of a cellphone during school is dependent on the school's policies, but if they have banned it, then they'll also have detailed out what action is to be taken, and I'm willing to bet that action doesn't include "write a letter of apology to the speaker, with focal points dictated by the principal of the school".

What his staff does is a representation of him. If he didn't want this to become an issue, all he had to do was tell his staff to let it rest.

as far as i can tell he's got nothing to do with it. brownback's 'social media team' probably told the principal 'don't you have control over your kids?' it's about the how the principal looks/feels in the eyes of his potential future employers/bosses
