Contradicpublicans; screaming about freedom and the American way - but oppressing everything they don't like and agree with. Typical.

Do none of you know how to read?

But Brownback's office, which monitors social media for postings containing the governor's name, saw Sullivan's post and contacted the Youth in Government program.

The story as presented is - "Someone other that the Governor contacted the school program with an unknown message, and the Principal wants the student to apologize for her comment."

And just because you guys love your lefty circle-jerks, this story gets translated to "Thin skinned GOP Governor against kids being free thinkers and free speech?"?

Do none of you realize why no one takes your opinions seriously?

Look at it from the Principal's perspective.

He has the responsibility to protect teachers and other students from many things, including social media usage. The responsibility is on his shoulders to ensure the school operates in a safe, secure, productive manner.

It is much easier to be a keyboard champion of GOP hate, than it is to ever actually shoulder responsibilities in life. And *that* is a large reason why none of you ATP&N lefties ever earn any respect for your opinions.

What she chose to say cannot be the problem, therefore, a letter of apology is not necessary. Usage of a cellphone during school is dependent on the school's policies, but if they have banned it, then they'll also have detailed out what action is to be taken, and I'm willing to bet that action doesn't include "write a letter of apology to the speaker, with focal points dictated by the principal of the school".

The court system has already ruled that students do not have the freedom of speech while attending a school function. If you have a problem with it, launch a lawsuit.

You did forget that she was there to learn as part of her politics class. Are you suggesting her actions are something the program should support...teaching her that her actions are acceptable pracitce?

When his staff isn't busy intimidating local teens, he's threatening private companies and interfering in the All-Mighty Free Market (tm):
http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2011/n...-vows-keep-boeing-wichita/?kansas_legislature

How does he score such high recommendations from the Club for Growth?

Shouldn't the governor allow the company to decide how to allocate its limited resources instead of trying to make decisions on its behalf?

Who is the next target for Gov. Brownback's bully-pulpit? Single Kansas-mothers living in poverty. Executive summary: they need to find men to marry to take care of them!

You claimed that what she said could not be the problem. This is where you are wrong, what she said IS the problem. Tweeting during class is also a problem. The two, while related, are independant problems.

Had she not been a jerk, the adults would not have reported her inappropriate behavior and the school would have never known about her tweet.

Since she chose to be a jerk, the adults reported her two counts of inappropriate behavior to the school.

Actions have consequences. This is the same teen who a few years from now is going to get fired for tweeting something bad about her employer, get fired, and then join the OWS movement complaining she can't find/keep a job.

Ha! So true!

Well, except you left out the last part where moveon.org persuades all the keyboard champions of GOP hate to donate money to her (to protect our free speech of course)

You mean like every post you have made here?

Doesn't change the fact that I am right in what I said.

Why is a student at a school? To learn the knowledge necessary to prepare oneself to live and be productive in today's world.

What is the job of a teacher? To teach students the skills and knowledge necessary to live and be productive in today's world.

What is the job of a principal? To ensure that teachers are teaching and students are learning.

Gosh how I wish the activists of this forum would drop their bullshit attitudes and actually analyze a situation for what it is. But, you guys never learn a damn thing. School failed you. Please don't force schools to fail everyone else.

Do you want me to congratulate you on your skills of being loud?

If the problem was her tweeting during class or a school activity, then she should be disciplined for that, perhaps given detention. She shouldn't have to apologize to the governor for her political views. To me that distinction seems pretty clear.

there was an apology but it was from the governor...

It appears the Governor has a different take on free speech than many of the posters here:
"My staff over-reacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize. Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms. I enjoyed speaking to the more than 100 students who participated in the Youth in Government Program at the Kansas Capitol. They are our future. I also want to thank the thousands of Kansas educators who remind us daily of our liberties, as well as the values of civility and decorum. Again, I apologize for our over-reaction."

that is not what is being bitched about. what the ruckus is about is the content of the tweet and not when and she has every right to voice her opinion no matter when it was posted. if she had praised brownback it would never have made it this far.

Let's review.

School has a student-in-government program that involves students in their local governments. What a great idea! A student in the program, at a speech by a state governor, disparaged the governor. During a school program, on school time, reflecting directly on that school.

It was inappropriate for the girl to excercise free speech during such an opportunity. She is being reprimanded. Refusing to follow through with the requirements of the reprimand may cause further punishment. Perhaps (most certainly) the punishment should have been requiring an apology for her inappropriate timing. Her viewpoints are not inappropriate - her timing for expressing them was.

This is not a free speech issue. I will agree it is small fries and should have gone ignored. However, it wasn't, and a student acted very inappropriately at a school function, and is being punished. Outrage not found, media turning this into something it isn't.

And for the obviously partisian motivated folks like Regpfg, Macamus, Ausm and ichy here who are using yet another media-create incident to display their hatred, perhaps you should grow up. Your blind praise of one group over another is just as stupid as ultra-nationalism or religious fanaticism. Some day maybe you'll see that.

Good on the Governor for stepping up as well.

she is not being reprimanded, the school dropped the punishment, as the link in my last post stated. both the school and governor have backed down as they should.

edit
The Shawnee Mission School District has also retracted its punishment for Sullivan.

If he was really thin skinned he would setup a website where people could report this type of activity.. ahem.. cough.. cough..

Are you referring to FightTheSmears.com and the more recent AttackWatch.com that the Obama campaign started in September?

the governor's response was appropriate. his staff should have ignored it.

the student's "tweet" was an admitted outright lie. there's no viewpoints to espouse, no critiques of the governor's policies, record, or personal life. she said she insulted the governor to his face and got away with it, when she didn't.

i don't know why people in this thread are trying to spin this as someone making legitimate complaints against government. it's not. it's teens being dumb asses, like teens do, and school administration and a governor's office over-reacting.
