Thieves steal air conditioning units from church, Phoenix

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Parishioners at a suburban Phoenix church had to sweat through a service after thieves stole two of the church's three air conditioners.

Authorities say the units weighed 5 tons each.

Pastor Tommy Foster tells The Arizona Republic that the theft from Mesa's Harmony Community Baptist Church happened sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The church's third unit did little to cool the building Sunday, which saw temperatures around 100 degrees at mid-day. Parishioners had to try and stay cool at Sunday services by fanning themselves with Bibles and morning programs.

Mesa police say air conditioner thieves typically will tear up the units and sell off copper parts and compressors, sometimes selling the parts over the Internet.

Its not uncommon for thieves to steal AC units in Phoenix, for copper, parts, etc. I'm not a very religious person, but I wouldn't be sitting through services that day. And if I was the preacher, I'd make my sermon as short as possible, and cut out all the BS hymns.

5 tons each? someone didn't notice some heavy equipment being used to move these units in the night?

I can pretty much guarantee that this is incorrect, it's just that the reporters don't know what they're talking about. I bet the cooling capacity was 5 tons, which is the same as a very big residential unit. A decent sized church could do pretty well with a set of 3 different 5 ton units.

One "ton" of cooling capacity of is equivalent to the cooling provided by melting one ton of ice over a 24 hour period. It's a common unit in the US to say the cooling capacity of an AC system. People will refer to them as a 2 ton unit, or a 5 ton unit, etc.

I will trust the guy from AZ when it comes to air conditioner talk.

If the units weighed 5 tons, thats 10,000lbs. Those units would be fucking impossible (Oceans 11 crew withstanding) to steal over night w/out anyone noticing. We're talking something well over 25feet long and 12 feet wide EACH.

Yeah, probably 5 ton AC capacity units...not 5 tons of weight each.

Hell, it's a church...they can just pray for cool.

5 tons yeah right. Im sure no one noticed the crane truck showup in the middle of the night and load them onto a flatdeck Trailer. I think its BS. 5 tons is not something you can just throw in a pickup and drive off with.

I came in to call BS to it as well and agree, these are 5ton units, not that they weigh 5tons.

I have a 5ton unit on my house and its not that heavy. 1 person could strip it out and lift it up if strong. But with meth/crackheads I bet it was more than 1.

Weather is God's will. Suck it up and bask in the heat.

Thieves put on construction hardhats and pull up in a heavy duty truck no matter what time of day and 99% of the people in a neighborhood figure it's legit.

This happens almost every Summer in Atlanta. Some churches are hit more than once. You would think someone would be selling rot iron railing enclosures as a means to discourage copper thieves.

They then just cut through the iron and take it as well.

Wish the police would go after the scrap yards more. Scrap yards know most of the stuff coming in from the same person is stolen. As long as scrap yards play the IDK where it came from and make money off of it, it will keep happening.

Would do dick all. These are professional jobs. All a fence does is deter punks off the street. When you think about it, a church is an ideal target. It's a building that's unoccupied most of the week. You can easily go in with machinery and remove the units without anybody batting an eye.

Someone posted a pic recently of an a/c unit in chicago that had a cage around it because units over there were getting stolen...

Yea they have them...

But like mmntech said and I agree, it will not stop the pros or those that really want it.

Heck to me if I was stealing I would think "great, now I have some iron to sell as well..."

If you want to stop it start with the scrap yards. Nobody willing to pay for it nobody will do it.

I spent a year doing energy analysis for HVAC and things like that, I learned a little bit when I did that but I'm hardly an expert.

You're not necessarily trying to make yours impossible to steal, just a little bit harder than the guy's next door.
