Thieves never stop even durring a pandemic.

Someone tried to break in my garage recently, probably last night but only noticed now. Guess they gave up, maybe it made too much noise and they figured they'd come back later to do the other pins. Added some screws from a weird angle so the pins can't be popped out, will do for now. Tempted to put 120v through them, but then they might sue. I hate how the law protects criminals.

I am planing to replace that door this summer actually, and will make sure it opens the proper way.

I for sure need to put a full blown camera system around my house. Theft in my city is completely out of control. It's not just certain neighbourhoods, it's everywhere.

I live in Chicago and never had any attempted theft. Just goes to show you that you can't just assume every part of an area is safe or dangerous.

Move to Texas. You'll be expected to shoot people like that and probably get thrown out if you don't. Of course you're surrounded by Texans though, so you'll want to shoot almost everyone.

That's one thing I wish we had here is castle laws. It's one of the things places like Texas have that I agree with 100%. Does not even need to involve guns, I just want to be able to bash a thieves head in with a crow bar and not worry about getting in trouble for it. Because believe me if I'm startled enough it will happen.

That's a little blood-thirsty, eh?

Why not just scare them off?

Alberta has seen a big increase in gun and ammo sales due to the corona virus crisis.

The buyers all said the same thing: defending one's home isn't an option. It's a necessity. Plus others are going hunting for game to cook.

So...Homicide it is.

Yay?

Defending your home is not homicide. Hell, it should be rewarded as a civic service. Shooting scumbag criminals is doing more to improve your community than picking up litter. Maybe we should treat it as such, like hunting nutria in Louisiana. Give every homeowner a punch card. Get 5 confirmed kills and you get to skip paying taxes for a year.

Can politicians count as two punches?

I've been thinking about getting something like these for my exterior doors.

Doesn't really stop anyone from breaking in, but once they do it should scare the shit out of them. Burglars don't like surprise alarms.

lol live on the south side silly buns.

We all know that the majority of the crime there isn't in the north side or in the 'burbs.

See, I knew that we could bring folks around to accepting a cap and trade system.

OP just add a dead bolt or a bar brace

Won't do any good with the door being installed like it is. Doors always open to the direction of the side with the hinge pins, so in this case it opens out (i.e. backwards, which prevents you from being able to keep it from being removed by pulling the hingepins).

OP was lucky that it was probably just a crime of opportunity - they probably saw the hinges and then tried to get in with what they had in their pocket. If it was someone smart who really wanted to and planned to get in there, a battery powered multitool or reciprocating saw with the right carbide-tipped blade would zip through those hinges like they weren't even there.

If you can, @Red Squirrel, you really need to replace that door as soon as possible. Those screws aren't even a deterrent.

EDIT: Or, pull it out of the frame and re-install it in the right direction on a temporary basis until you can replace it.
