I have IW. What would you guys recommmend for a widescreen mod? When I loaded it up a while back, it seemed like the game was zoomed in too much. Felt very awkward for a PC.
Widescreen Gaming Forum is usually the best for widescreen-modding issues of old games. There appears to be a utility to adjust the hard-coded FOV (works same way as the "Sneaky Upgrade" of Thief 3):-

This may help too:-

As for level design today, you can't beat the level design of the first and second Thief games. I know people rave about the Cradle mission in Thief 3, but they obviously haven't played Return to the Cathedral yet! :p

Agreed! That and "Down In The Bonehoard" had great atmosphere.

So...is this worth $25? Unfortunately I missed the sub $15 sales last week, and the best deal now is $25 on Gamers Gate. Sale is only good for 5 more hours. Otherwise, I'll have to wait for the something like the Steam Summer Sale.

I found this game boring as hell and never came close to finishing it. Just my own opinion of course.

You're really not missing much... I got as far as the first two levels on a friends rig before giving up out of frustration of sheer "dumbed-down-ness" and the plethora of annoyances. Example "Mission requirement" from Mission 1 : "Get 4 headshots". In Thief...

once you get past chapter 2 yes....it is; the game really opens up; I enjoy this game a lot and first to admit; first two chapters are boring as hell......

After that the game really does get interesting.....its not game of the year but easily solid 8.....

I have played all the Thiefs (particularly 2).

I've been amused by the nostalgia over the early Thiefs...they had their problems too.

I really enjoyed this one even if it had some annoyances. The missions are fine, the in-betweens get old after a while.

Definitely worth 25$.

It's been out 2 months, as a supposedly big budget game, and it's already been on sale for $15 and is pretty much $25 as standard price.

Surely that tells you whether it's worth it or not.

Not really. It's a Square Enix game, they go on insane sales all the time shortly after release.

Well, someone I am subbed to on YT started playing it, and it doesn't look bad. Normally I would just continue to watch, but the person's play style makes me think I would enjoy it more if I played it myself.

Anyways, I missed the sale, but I see I can get it for around $20 on ebay. Since I can get it for $20 there is no rush...probably won't get to it for a awhile.

Mild necro... but I just finished Thief Gold. It's the first Thief game that I've finished and this is an accomplishment because I never finished Thief 3. And I rage-quit-uninstalled Thief Gold when I got stuck and sick of the game.

I reinstalled it today, the day after, and finished the rest of the levels. Let me first say that modern games really are dumbed down compared to games of yore -- thank effing goodness. The maps in this game suck and no waypoint markers. I probably spent at least 50% of my clocked game time wandering around a completely cleared out level -- yes, I played it THAT way -- trying to find some stupid passage or object I missed. Frustration got the better of me and I just started using walkthroughs. Biggest WTF goes to the undead and zombies. What the hell? Thief game turned into some super natural Tomb Raider.

This was one of those "great" games I missed when I was a kid. The demos blew me away and I thought it was so cool, but I never felt like buying any of them for some reason. I did not find this experience enjoyable. It's a game from 1999 though so I'll give it that.

Considering that I felt roughly the same about Thief 3, I probably shouldn't pick up Thief 4 when it's on sale.

The maps were deliberate mazes, they were made so that you actually had to remember where you went, rewarding memory and good navigation. They're not like the linear games today they actually had height and depth to them rather than just being a long windy single path.

It's not a good thing that new games are dumbed down, the more they get dumbed down the less like games they become and more like interactive movies, that has its place and cool when it's done right, but we dont need to see all games go this route.

You probably got lost because you didn't pay attention and you're not paying attention because you never need to in modern games, it's been trained out of you by simpler and simpler games. The mazes in Thief were one of its selling points back in the day, because it actually challenged gamers to think about what they were doing.

It does take a very specific personality to like the sneaking about in the thief games though, they're certainly not for everyone which is probably why they went the route the did with the Thief 4 reboot, to newb it up for the modern generation of gamers and appeal to the mass market.

It seems like people have mixed thoughts about this game. I don't play a lot of games these days but definitely plan to try this one. I liked all the previous Thief games, and this game even has quicksaves, which already puts it above the vast majority of modern games in my book.

I played Thief 1 and 2 when they came out, and they were very good but definitely had their flaws. I liked Thief 3 much better overall. It had a better plot, and the levels were smaller (not quite as bad as IW) but better designed. The first two games had huge but very sparsely detailed levels and a lot of areas looked the same. I'm usually a big fan of spread out, nonlinear maps but these games were just confusing, especially with the lack of any map/waypoint system. I'm even a long time Descent player and have no trouble with getting lost in those games. Thief 2 in particular really dropped off towards the end (Lost City is probably the most annoying level I have ever seen in a game), although the rest of the game was excellent.

Finished Thief Gold and Thief 2 over the past week. FML. Decade old graphics, old crappy controls and interface... I deserve a medal.
