Work ethic and education.

Generally the indian population is highly motivated, and highly educated.

my parents came here with nothing, but they started saving as soon as they found jobs. And of course, we did pay back the uncle that let us stay in his house.

My dad is still extremely cheap with everything, and so's my mom, up to an extent. We went to a restaurant for my sisters birthday, and even before we got there, I was gonna know the outcome. Well, we got there and sat down, started lookin at the menus. The entrees were like $6-8 each and my dad had this stunned look on his face. He's been so used to buying fast food Indian dinners that he coulnt believe the prices at this place.

Needless to say, he ordered like 3 entrees, and we split it between the 6 of us and the total came out to $29 something. No tip either, since the waiter had been a jackass according to him.

If only he knew that some of the restaurants I go to are like $25 per person. 😱

those sound like my parents 🙂

One thing about indian culture is that education is very important there. It's unbelievable how much they stress it to the children.

Exactly. Not to single any race out, but at my work, where the majority of people work do labor work, on payday (thursday), there is always 2 groups of people that are lining up at the cash truck outside. The cash truck cashes their check for $2-5 depending on the amount, and I have yet to see a white or Asian (including, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, etc) cashing their check. Our spending habits are more careful than others, or so it seems.

damn right. All Indian parents want their children to become doctors. If a child says that "oh, I would like to become a park ranger" theyd probably get disowned or deported back to India. 😀

Because they come to this country to make something of themselves.

I don't like the tone of these posts, saying that perhaps Indians have better work ethics than some other races :|

In my opinon, Asians don't get their fair share of discrimination. I say more discrimination against Asians is needed to make it fair for all minorities.

(And, I too am kidding)

Race has nothing to do with it. Once their children become Americanized they will become fat and lazy like the rest of Americans🙂

Probably because most of us only know of Indian Cuisine that's made with curry. Because I can't stand curry I've never ventured into an Indian Restaurants so I'm totally ignorant when it come to any other Indian dish that's made without curry.

When I was a Property Manager I had a lot of tenants that were from India and though they were almost all great tenants, when they moves I always had to replace the Curtains and sometimes the Carpet because I couldn't get the smell of curry out. A small price to pay for good tenants though (plus I always deducted from their deposits for the cleaning or partial cost of replacing the Drapes and Carpet) I can say this, I never had any tenants from India stiff me on the rent. I sure can't say that about all the American tenants (no matter what race) I had.

go to a good Indian restaurant and try some of the other food. You'll love it.

One of the things I noticed (and talk about frequently) with my non-Indian friends is the difference in the family structure in India. I know a guy whose dad spends 6 months in India and 6 months here. His wife and kids are all here. I think the major reason he does this is because the family structure is so different between here and India. In India, often times you'll see large families living together. Grandparents will (almost) always live with the oldest son, and they'll try to live nearby. People are used to having their extended families close by, and as such are VERY close to them. All of my cousins are my best friends, and I talk to them regularly. This is even true for some of my second cousins. So when they come to this country, and are 3000 miles away from the people that they are traditionally supposed to be very close to it's difficult. And it's also VERY true that they're sending a large quantity of money back home ... something I know my parents do often. However it's important to note (in response to Mrs Skoorb's post about her Indian Uncle) that Indians also have a lot of differences depending on where they are from. I have a friend who is Indian, but 5 generations have lived in South Africa. The family is still ethnically pure Gujurati, but culturally they are all British ... they eat naan with a fork.

hahaha, in a way, that is true. Its not really a fair assesment to judge an immigrant who has come from another country to "make it in America" so to speak, with someone of another race who has been in America for a while, generationally. Usually, immigrants come here for the purpose of building a better life and to be successful. That is their drive, because they are often times, leaving family, friends, and familiarity to come here. On the other hand, their grandchildren are acostomed to many comforts and are generally ingrained into US customs and probably take a lot of things for granted (being a 2nd generation Indian, I know I do). That focus on the drive to succeed is just not as prevalent after a few generations.

just my 2 cents.

Do the Restaraurants smell of Curry? If they do I don't think I'd be able to stomach being in there for an extended period of time. Whats a good Indian Dish as I am always open for new and interesting cuisine from other parts of the globe. Is Indian Cuisine (without Curry) difficult to prepare at home?

If you go to any Indian restaurant, you will most certainly smell spices and other food, but I dont know about the curry smell. I can't name any dishes off the top of my head that youd like but a lot of people love tandoori chicken.

chicken tikka masala is one of my favorites
also shahi paneer

damn this thread's making me hungry

EDIT: almost forgot the infamous butter chicken

The thing is with all those people living there that apartment is going to take one hell of a beating (and probably reek of Curry)

tis true, one needs a large house to contain the reek of curry to the kitchen🙂 stuff should be a controlled substance😛
Well it's better than having College kids living in a one bedroom Apt where the smell of BO and Beer permeate the who place

Actually, I don't mind curry... good stuff... hmmm do they make curry with veal? I can't stand Kimchee thou... why can't some of the Korean houses smell like Grilled marinated beef instead of Kimchee? 🙂
