They do it differently in India, eh?

I've mentioned this fellow in the past - a guy I work with is Indian and has been in the US for a few years. He went to India 2 years ago and out of a group of girls whom he quickly interviewed selected one as the lucky bride. They now live in the US and had a kid a month back. This guy makes decent money but they still live in a one bedroom apartment that I KNOW he could easily afford to upgrade to at least a two. So, he has a wife and kid and a one bedroom apartment.

Of course his mother had to come along to oversee the birthing and she's been with them for a couple of months. He sleeps on the couch. He has also in the past had two cousins visit for weeks or months on end (Indians take the longest freaking vacations) and they all stay in this one bedroom apartment.

Weirder still is that his wife very soon is going back to India to stay with relatives for THREE months. He is going to miss his new born son and wife for a three month stretch. I realize that India has one billion people and quarters are cramped over there, but it seems that they are so used to it that it doesn't bother them. If I was dirt poor I'd live in cramped quarters, but as soon as I had the money for a larger apartment/home I'd jump on it, and this guy just seems to have no complaints at all!

Both my parents, while growing up in India, lived in one-bedroom bungalows. My dad has four brothers and a sister--so that's 6 kids plus parents plus whatever relatives happen to be visiting at the time! The only other rooms were a common sitting room, a kitchen, and a toilet-hole-in-the-ground + bath room.

Umm not really, there is a very huge middle class in India. They live in houses which are not mansions by any standard but they definitely arent cramped anyways either. It also depends on which city you are living in. If you are living in cities like Bombay (or Mumbai), the rates are damn expensive (somewhat like New York) and you are forced in live in cramped places. Otherwise houses can be much bigger than the houses in USA.

Now why this guy is living in a one bedroom apartment is something I cant explain. I can just speculate that he thinks he can manage with a one bedroom apartment (which is not totally wrong) and he will upgrade when he has another kid (which could be a few years down the line). So theres no real need to live in a two bedroom apartment. Of course he could just be stingy and be doing this for the need of saving money😛

There is no tone you idiot! He is stating facts. He is stating the differences among us, including different lifestyles! He is NOT saying one is right or one is wrong or one is better than the other.

I didn't say kill the indians, or damn him because he's a dark-skinned Indian. Jesus, I was merely pointing out some differences that I noticed. I don't know many indians and he is the source of most of what I say. I am not pretending that all indians are like him, and perhaps it's more his personality than culture. I didn't put him down at all. I merely expressed a lack of understanding for how he does certain things.

Anyhow, I should add that I have an Uncle (married my mother's sister) who is Indian. He is my second father.

He grew up in Africa after his family moved from India when he was a little boy. Today, he lives in a HUGE house and insists that it will never ever be big enough since he spent so many years in such cramped quarters with such a large family! 🙂

This man also has 5 cars and a yacht. He says he does all of this because he now has the money and would like his children to have what he never did. 🙂

I bet I know the reason for both observations. One, it's expensive to travel back and fourth to India, so once his family is here, it's worth it to stick around for a while. Two, he may very well be sending dollars back home. If that's the case, he may not be able to afford the bigger apartment, or would rather see the money saved, going to his family.

typically speaking, most indians that come from india are very stingy. they're used to saving money wherever they can. It's just part of their lifestyle. Plus a ticket to India costs anywhere from $1000-1500. So that's usually why when they go visiting back home, they stay for awhile. I'm going in March with my fiance for our marriage and its going to cost me ~$2800 for both of our tickets. I felt like crying when i handed the cash over to the travel agent.

No freakin way. When I first moved here I lived in an apartment building with two Indian Families down the hall. I'll take just about any freakin' smell over Curry any day.

We were so happy when they moved out... And what replaced them? Some families from Korea. Nice folks, but they cook somethng that smells even worse. (No offense intended towards my Korean boardmates 🙂 )

I'll take BO and beer anyday.

I remember tha time 12-13 years ago when I first came to the US and we lived in my uncle's 2-bedroom apartment. It was my family of four, my uncle's family of four, and my other uncle's family of five, and my grandma and grandpa.

15 people in a 2-bedroom apartment 😀


altho, it was just temporary, since we were only gonna live there once one of the uncles and my dad and my mom found a decent job to support us. We moved out a couple of years later and got our own 2-bedroom basement-apartment then a couple of years after that, we moved to a 1-bedroom apartment that wasnt a basement, and was also much cleaner than the previous house.

In 96, my dad bought a townhouse in the suburbs. And now, my parents are searching for a house in the 200-250 range around here.
