nobody else noticed the OP was doing 75 mph on the highway taking video of some cable rails so he could bitch on atot?

RANT: Fucking totalled my Vette just driving (fail to mention at 100mph) down Interstate 102 because they fucking put these cables right at the edge of the lane (10' outside of it actually)...I just tried to avoid a rut (actually drifted while texting on my iPhone about directions to my LAN party)....FUUUUUUUU!!!!

Does nobody else notice all the snow in the median that the OP keeps telling us about that stops all the cars?

What... is that supposed to be obnoxiously fast to you or something?

Hint: it's extremely easy to control a car, in good weather, at 75mph. That's my typical highway cruising speed too.

Also, in Michigan, most of the highways have a 70mph speed limit. 75mph wouldn't even get you pulled over.

They save lives. They slow down cars, unlike jersey barriers that just bounce/flip them. Who gives a fuck if they hurt your paint. And I'll take safety concerns from a motorcyclist the day they bother wearing helmets in my state. Or drive the speed limit.

They put these in the median on a toll highway where I live but it's a huge median and they're no where near the road.

Says who? I ran into one after falling asleep and the only damage to my car was on the two wheels and tires on that side. Try that with a cable barrier.

fast? not really i suppose. driving 75 while taking video with your phone? seems a little like distracted driving to me. but i suppose that you are uber and cannot be distracted by simple things like making videos with your phone while driving.

So just as a cherry on top of why these barriers are so bleeping important...

I present to you, a Prius vs a Chevy Blazer today on US-23 near I-96 5 dead, 4 seriously hurt. All transported to where I happen to work.

First the Blazer:

Now the Prius:

All I will say is RIP. And I hope they put barriers up there...

Even better:
Police said the two people killed in the Blazer were not wearing seatbelts.

Yeah...awful accident in metro Detroit today, too bad.

And just because I was looking the other day, I noticed that there are cable barriers on 275 between M-14 and 696. Interesting though, sometimes they have them on both sides, sometimes just one side alternating like someone mentioned is done in Ohio. I tried to make out the pattern based on which side of the freeway was higher and the median width, but couldn't really figure it out.

Wow, that Prius was demolished. I don't see how anyone could ever survive that.

The two front passengers of the blazer wasn't wearing seatbelts? Looking at the blazer I don't think they would of survived, but I thought in this day and age wearing a seatbelt was automatic.

From all of the cable rails that I've seen in MI, its alternating cable rails.

Link showing a car crossing 196/96 from Cascade road to 131 in the past 10 years?
You are being asinine.

While bitching about the (relatively low) costs of barriers you expect someone to pull very small slice of data out of their ass just because he works for the DOT?! And have it available on the web?!? What if he isn't your state's DOT?

Even if he does work for your state, the state probably doesn't have that data on hand, it'd have to be produced. If they had it on hand, and you knew the cost of maintaining that detailed level of crash analysis on a public website, you'd be bitching about that cost.

[edit] Hint: These types of barriers were deemed effective and are being applied everywhere. Not just your slice of heaven where accidents only occur when snow drifts are there to stop vehicles crossing a median.

and....I called it.

A car slid off the road and hit one of these things this morning. Backed up the highway because instead of being in the ditch, the car was half in the fast lane. Tore the bumper right off the car too.

Good job guys!

Yep
Same deal on 131 this morning, instead of just sliding into the median, the car was in the road and the front of it was wrecked.

Looks like i will be running back roads all winter to avoid it.

did anyone die? Did it prevent a possible head on collision? How many people have to be inconvenienced before it equals the cost of a life?

They have them up along highway here. Waste of money.
I was late to an interview about 2 months ago because people didn't know how to drive on highway.
SUV was flipped over in ditch wrapped up in this shit. Just went down the HWY last week & noticed they put up some fresh rope garbage stuff.
I didn't get the job, I hope they were all dead.

In the state I got my license in, (Ohio) it did not have a disclaimer that I am now a traffic engineer. I guess that is not the case in Michigan? Not surprising considering Ohio is better than Michigan in many other ways...

Is it really necessary to necro post? We've beaten this to death already.

woah i'm surprised the driver of the prius survived.

as for the blazer folks not wearing seatbelts...lol dead regardless.

I think everyone in the Prius did die. One of them survived the impact but later died in the hospital.
