They are putting up stupid steel rope type barriers on the highway...

In place here for several years. Thought they were supposed to keep cars out of oncoming traffic. We don't get the winters like you, thankfully.

Dang $65K per mile?!?

Edit:Brent Walker with the DOH said about the cable barriers. Cable barriers aren't a sure thing, but Walker says they do work 85 to 90 percent of the time.

costs $65,000/mile?!

What do those regular steel barracades cost?

What kind of backwards place do you live in if there are no concrete barriers between freeways??

There are concrete barriers, but concrete barriers cost 4x as much. Also if you hit a concrete barrier at 70-80 mph, you will die.

Michigan

We have cement barriers where there is oncoming traffic. Our medians do a fine job...especially when they are packed with snow or bogged down with mud. I'd say you might be able to drive across one maybe 4 months out of the year if you tried.

Cars will and have crossed the median causing fatalities. If this happened to you on the highway, you'd be kissing those cable rails.

Regular steel barricades costs several times more than cable rails. Not only that, cable rails are easier/faster/cheaper to replace/repair. If you are shocked that cable rails cost $65k/mile, you should look up how much a mile of concrete costs.

Overall cable rails are there to reduce fatalities, which it does. A cable cannot cut you in half, people are watching too many movies. It causes more vehicle damage, but it saves lives. DOT is going to have to figure out how to reduce vehicle damage. I think moving the rails to the center would be a good idea.

The kind of place that isn't so broke they have resorted to raiding the public's safety deposit boxes that haven't been visited recently and selling the loot. Why??? Because we use cost effective highway barriers that keep cars out of oncoming traffic and also prevent the car from bouncing back into regular traffic.

Anyone bitching about car damage should learn to keep their car on the road. They have already save many lives here.

Well you're not going to convince me. I think they're a great idea and will save many lives and is a cost effective way to stop crossovers. A crossover is not good. Two cars, head on, 60+ Mph.

Cable rails are old school. They used to attach them to wooden posts. I've never seen a new version. I didn't know anyone used them anymore.

is nothin

578 million dollar school f*ck yea!

Down here, those are supposed to stop vehicles not to run into the other side of the highway and make crash even worse (head on).

He lives in Orange County not LA County. Totally different worlds.

Link showing a car crossing 196/96 from Cascade road to 131 in the past 10 years?

I dont have a link, but the facts are that cars cross the median causing a fatal accident. If the engineers at DOT didn't think cable guard rails were a good idea, they would be taking them down.

Cable rails are cheap and effective, which is why you will be seeing more of them being implemented.

lol..but its so common!!

And no...the DOT doesn't do things just because its a good idea. They did this to spend stimulus money. How do I know? Well the giant signs at the beginning of the construction zone are a big hint.

And you working for MDOT explains a lot. Now I know why the stuff they do doesn't make sense; they have idiots working for them.

Dude lay off him it's not his fault MDOT frustrates you. I live in Michigan too and yes construction is frustrating but as an ER/trauma nurse these cable rails WILL save lives. I cant tell you how many patients I've taken care of that crossed the median into oncoming highway traffic and either ended up dead or critically injured.

The damage thing is a non-factor. Any speed >50mph and your car is going to be toast no matter what you hit. The cable rails ARE safer because they are flexible, they have give and will break but will slow you down enough that you won't cross the median.

Dude you're an idiot, you don't even know how the internal system inside MDOT works. You're just some idiot on the road that complains about the cable guardrails and doesn't know better. We have our own research/facts/stats to back up what we do, we don't go parade around like you and say/assume "People don't cross the median all that much!". You're not the expert, the engineers at MDOT are. If you don't trust them, then stop driving on MI roads and bridges.

The truth is that people do cross the median and people do die in this type of crash. MDOT is there to provide you with the ability to travel to your destination whether that be a job or for pleasure while being safe.

...And just FYI those giant signs are there to inform the public what the stimulus is being spent on....oh you know...ROADS and not on some Exec's vacation. You're really something else.

Slow golf clap with a smooth transition into a roaring applause:thumbsup:

I feel asleep at the wheel a few years back, woke up on an empty highway(my side at least) after tapping the right hand guardrail. That wakes you up real fast. I'm still made at myself that I wasn't able to recover perfectly, but instead swerved too hard left and ended up on the steel ropes in the median, they peeled back the front fender on my Pontiac Vibe but I got control and drove off the highway. Stopped under an underpass and called for a ride, officer showed up and took an accident report.

So happy to have survived.

God. I fell asleep once too during rush hour on the 405. I was in the car pool lane and hit the center divider. Woke up real fucking quick after that and straightened it out. I hit it pretty damn hard but amazing thing is that when I checked the car, there was no damage at all.

I freely admit that he's probably right in this case...I just don't like the guy. His posts over in GG&P have convinced me that his brain is either fried from pot or sniffing asphalt.

Sounds like I'm not the one sniffing asphalt. Grow up.

It really sucks when you hit one in a vehicle made of fiberglass! This is a buddy of mine's vette, he hit the cable barrier pretty hard and was lucky the cable didn't take his head off
