where do you live?
Zip code 20904. Comcast has a monopoly on broadband here, and their price of $57.95 (non-cable TV customers) proves it.

just trying to get your viewpoint vs my g'burg one. heh... never getting it

Calling Comcast tomorrow, but only staying with them until Verizon tells me FIOS is coming.

Nuts to telephones!

heh at least you can get lined DSL. i have wireless. wich is ok but it still sucks. up until like 5 months ago i had to settle for directtway. ugh man that was terrible and expensive.

oh what i would do for FIOS.

what's amazing isn't just the download speeds, OMFG the DNS Servers must not have much of a load on them as response is very very quick.

amazing.

there used to defintely be a lag when using comcast that just isn't there with FIOS.

you're kidding, right? for $10 more you get 15Mbps and you even consider not getting it? to bad the upstream is still only 2Mbps for the 15Mbps deal.

Not everybody needs 15Mps (well I do)

FIOS @ DSL Speeds would still be worth it because of the fast DNS

SWEEET.

interesting note:

the router they are giving me, an Actiontec Broadband router with wireless, has a fiber coax in, however, fiber comes only as far as the DMark in the house, from their it's cat 5.

anyway, in a couple of hours (once they finish splicing outside at the pole) i will be speeding around the World Wide Web using FIOS.

HURRAY ME.

questions about the install...

- will they place the Dmark fiber->Cat5 converter anywhere you want? or does it have to be near the line entry point to the house?

- will they wire Cat5 / install jacks for you? (i figure this is unlikely)

edit for clarification:
I'm getting FIOS installed next week on a Small Business Account

it's interesting tho because the install guys aren't too thrilled about a lot of people wanting fios. they had run a fiber line from 8 poles down to my house. they will have to run from that one pole to about 90 different homes in this neighborhood. each house has a separate line so if my next door neighbor decides he wan't it, they have to come back and run another line all the way, they can't just piggy back off mine.

it took them 2 guys each came with their own verizon vans AND more guys in a bucket to do the whole thing (bucket guys only came at the end to splice the lines, 2 guys 2 vans did the actual run).

they are going to have to find an easier way to do this because once demand goes very high (they are already advertising verizon TV here and it's not even available) demand is going to go SKY HIGH.

it will be mad house.

It only took 1 guy to do my install. Love it!

that'd be my deal killer. I have no need for 15Mbps now. hehe. more upstream is always nice.

that fios map sucks, fios is literally available 6-7 miles down the road. ugh

i'm sure they'll do it for you (run cat 5) but they might charge you for it.

they put my dmark where the phone line orginally came into the house. then the ran a cat5 wire to where i previously had a router.

Yep and because it is not Americans decision to have competition there is no other choice.

Only 5/2 for the loweset grade service where you are? In my area, it is 10/2 for the lowest grade (LI, NY) at $35/month. If my parents decide to switch over from Cablevision/OptOnline, they could potentially be saving $10-$15 (or more if Verizon gives discounts for bundling TV and Internet and having a landline/mobile phone line with them) a month. Too bad I won't be around to see the change though since I leave for college next Friday.

Just got FIOS installed last week here in Tigard, OR. I'm on the 5/2 for $35 a month plan (I don't really have the need for more than that). Install went very smoothly, and the installer just used my existing wireless router (he left the Verizon-provided Actiontec with me, unopened). It's great, very responsive as everyone has mentioned.

The best part is that I also switched to DirecTV so I am no longer suckling at Comcast's teat. ;)
