The reason is because most guys in this heavily-skewed male forum relate to him and his assumed life experiences with issues related to looks. The article suggesting she is extremely far out of his league, becomes a personal slight, because that means she is out of the reader's league as well.
He may be the nicest, funniest guy in the world, but that isn't what the contest was about. It is about pure shallow first-glance physical appearance, which has far more influence over the pairing of mating partners than personality.
There are always exceptions, but generalizations aren't always off-base.
The importance of appearance alone does decrease as you get away from your teen years, when men and women start regressing to the mean physically, and women seek out a good father/provider.
