I saw what happens in college programming classes when they try to jam a lot of women into them. Especially ones without strong math backgrounds. Guys leave the class because it is dumbed down. Because they are told not to succeed, to try less hard.

Feminism is about free choice and equality. And while in the early days of feminism, a faction of women co-opted the movement from the founders, most of whom were stay at home moms and homemakers. WYSIWYG... LegendKiller's claims that wysiwyg was devised for women, because the frail little mindless beings they are, just couldn't use computers without it, didn't sit well with me for a number of reasons.

Then I remembered, my mom, who'd been a secretary for much of her life, introduced me to word processors. At that time, when computers were just coming out in software form, wysiwyg didn't exist. If you wanted Bold, the text had to be "marked up" with tags just like html, jml etc today. Remember word perfect? Well, needless to say, it was women who were the primary users of Word Perfect because it was primarily used by secretaries, most of which happened to be women. I remember my mom complaining that she actually had more typing to do because the men couldn't learn to use the mark up language.

So, if anything, wysiwyg was really invented to make computers easier for men. Of course, I'd never make such an asinine statement in the first place as it would clearly indicate a mind firmly entrenched in the past and bitter about the future.

@Legend, what you described as how you treat your daughter is exactly what feminists have fought for. No one has asked on the feminist side that things be "dumbed down." What they have asked is that women be treated as equal which you seem to do with your daughter. That will temper her to be equal, to never be trod on by an overbearing man.

Studies have shown repeatedly that girls do better when challenged. When girls are not called on in math class, they get weak. That's one of the most well documented complaints from feminists in the past. Those studies have found that there is a bias towards boys in math, one you seem to share, I might add, that tends to lead teachers to skip calling on girls in math class (after a certain age). Girls step up to the same challenges boys do, generally.

You attribute many things (falsely) to feminism. However, how you treat your daughter equal to your sons is exactly what feminism hoped to accomplish.

One of the few feminist things I agree with is the concept that much of our gender-related behavior is learned. Women don't act like idiots because women are idiots. Women act like that because weak men teach them to act like that. Modern men are bitching about the declining quality of women, but they never look in the mirror to see why that is happening.
