there should be an "=" on the num pad

Seriously. Flying through basic equations in excel is quite quick on just the numpad... but the damn = button is all the way over there.

It's what the Enter key is good for.

..actually, I haven't used Excel in a long time. I don't know if that will do the same thing as an "=". If so, it's a software design failure. The numpad layout was designed after an adding machine.

Works great for calc.exe

See the large ENTER button?

Yup... and regardless of how hard I press it, it doesn't print the "=" symbol. I even tried yelling at it.

To start an equation in excel you have to type "=789464+4848+468-4984" whatever... if that "=" isn't there then it just prints your text and doesn't perform the function.

Again, the numpad needs a "="

No, you can type +789464+4848+468-4984 and it will automatically put the = in there for you. That way you do not have to leave the number pad.

Calc.exe is all you need. That and the Number Pad. Don't needs me no stinkin' eqwalls signs, son! What'n the hell is a'wrong with yew? Eqwalls signs my ass...

Why are you using excel for basic equations? If you aren't putting in cell references, you probably shouldn't be using excel to do the calculation.

First... I am, that was just an example.

Second... excel is open on my PC every second that the PC is on it so it's much easier to use that for any math I need a calculator for. In case of mis-typing something it's a lot easier to fix there than in the calculator.

It's quicker to do things in Excel than with calc.exe.

Say for example:

SQRT((AVERAGE(C1:C10))/15)*C11

Yes, but the OPs complaint was that the numpad didn't have an enter key on it. In other words, his equations would be completely 156+156+648+235 type of equations.

no, my complaint was that it doesn't have an EQUALS key... it has an ENTER key (very different as we're discussing)

Another reason why the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 is the best keyboard.

enter, parenthesis, and backspace above the numpad

I wish they'd offer keyboards built for us folks with big hands...I can't use the number pad the right way...not enough room for my big hands and fingers.
I do just fine on a good business calculator, (I own a Monroe) but the keys have a bit more space between them...and the lay-out for the +-*/= keys makes more sense to me.
