There are so many illegal immigrants in the US because...

It can't be done legally for the majority of people who want to move to the US. Do you realize that the average Mexican, for instance, has damn near no way to get into the US? Well you may not want the low skilled uneducated ones anyway, but even for people who are skilled and educated there are still few doors to legal entry into the US, at least these days.

For instance I, a computer software "guy", has for all intents and purposes no way to become a permanent resident of the US. Barring rare circumstances the only way I can become one is through MrsSkoorb, and the only way she can become one is by us ponying up thousands of dollars in immigration and lawyers fees.

Unless you're lucky enough to be working in a sought after field like a nurse (and don't even for a second think that becoming a permanent resident is easy for quick or cheap for somebody like that), you have to live years of uncertainty while your greencard process carries though. And it can be broadsided at any moment. Lose your job? Probably have to start again (after being forced to leave the US since you no longer have that job).

Unless you have somebody in the US you can marry chances are it's probably just not even worth bothering unless your home country is a piece of garbage (and you can try and claim refugee status or something similar). I can say with almost total certainty that if we weren't already so far through the process (when in actual fact we haven't even started it but that's something else entirely), we'd have never come down here. The US is nice, but you guys SERIOUSLY have to fix your totally fugged up immigration processes. For those from good countries it's often not worth the effort, and for those from crappy countries where it is worth the effort congrats, you just got another low skilled uneducated laborer (who probably has to come in illegally anyway).

Skoorb rant over.

Yeah, but the US and Canada have an open border policy...you don't need papers to visit here or live here....AFAIK. Am I incorrect?

BTW, I am glad that you and the Mrs. are here. We need more hardworking young folks in our country. Enough of this Avril Levine/Skater/Slacker kid nonsense. :p

Oh yeah you're incorrect all right! Not only does a Canadian in the US need to maintain an active status in the US to just sit here, but to work they have to have either a work visa or be here under TN status, which is linked to only one job. To get a TN you have to work in a specific field and have specific skills/education. Of course if you lose your job you have 10 days to leave the country or try and find a new one (which will require going back to the border to get another TN). It's easier for Canadians, but far from easy.

If you and the Mrs. want to be americans A way is to have a kid. The kid will be american the second it is born here. After that is is easier for you and her (as long as you are still married) to become americans

If you're not a citizen Skoob, just bang up Mrs. Skoob and . . .yea. We all know how that works right? Pregnant mexican woman runs to the US to give birth and stays for the welfare.

Very true. Only thing is you have to wait until the kid is 21 to sponsor you.

What does it take to become a citizen of other major, industrialized nations? France, Germany, Japan? Do they just let anybody move there?

Not really sure...we aren't even at this point trying to get citizenship (must have greencard for 5 years I think). We're just trying to become permanent residents so that we can work any job and stay here as long as we like. It's like being a landed immigrant in Canada...

But in reality the mom and dad has to stay to take care of raising the kid. . .

Not anymore, border is under increased scrutiny now that all of Al Qaeda is relocating to Canada from Afghanistan. Shame on them for taking advantage of our inept little brother to the north.

We need illegal Mexicans because we need more janitors and dishwashers in this country. They're not taking jobs away from people... they're taking jobs that no one wants!

We should kick out some of those people on welfare with 11 kids.

Too extreme?

U.S immigration policy is a joke.

The U.S is being invaded from the south, and nothing is being done to stop it. The current immigrants from Mexico have no desire to assimilate to America like generations of immigrants did in the past. They want to change America to suit them. And with the sheer numbers they possess, they are succeeding.

I am strongly for educated legal immigrants who want to come here and have a productive relationship with the United States.

I am strongly against these uneducated, unskilled, immigrants who offer nothing to this country.

Edit: And I know someone will come on here saying, but what would we do without them to take the jobs nobody else wants? Like landscaping and janitorial and things of that nature. Well there are plenty of people who will do those jobs, both American and immigrants from Asia and Africa who are known to be more upwardly mobile and less apt to exhibit criminal behavior than immigrants from latin america.

It's pretty bad. One of my TAs (who is on a student visa) applied for a job at Microsoft. Went for an interview, and later got an email saying he got the job. He was happy as can be. Few days later he gets another email from Microsoft HR saying that they currently do not sponsor people for work visas so he's screwed. Since he isn't a Canadian immigrant he can't get a regular visa to work/live in teh States unless MS sponsors him (which they aren't doing right now).

So he's screwed, there went his job opportunity at MS. He was pissed as I would be in his shoes.

Only thing that bugs me about Mexican immigrants is many them don't pay taxes. I'd much rather have the masses of non-educated immigrants over the "educated" ones that come here, attend all of the best US institutions of higher learning, and then return to their native country to use what they learned against us :(

maybe its b/c we think the terrorists are in afghanistan, when in reality they can just jump the border.

i think if a mexican can get across undetected, i think a terrorist shouldnt have a problem either
