The platform source code is free and open. MS could have just added its own app store, Bing maps, and its own voice services instead of reinventing the bicycle from scratch.

MS has always had a mobile OS, they are putting that generation to bed and revamping their mobile line with WP7. What Rubin is saying is nonsense. This isn't another platform, it's supplants an existing one.

Conversly Google has never had a mobile OS, yet they created one, rather than simply continue to provide it's apps and services solely on the current mobile platforms. Hence this statement is highly ironic.

I'm an Android fan, but those are some pretty ridiculous comments from Rubin. Borderline Jobs-ish.

right

Let the market (aka consumers) decide. There are a ton of people that are thinking that WP7 will be completely awesome. I don't have any faith that it will be and I think that when this flops, they will go to either Android or iOS.

MS should focus on tablets.

I don't really see anything wrong with his quote, I tend to agree as well. When I first heard about the WP7 platform, I thought much the same thing - do we really need yet another phone platform? MS is certainly welcome to make one, but its not in response to any major lack of features/technical capabilities in what already exists in the other platforms. I don't really see the quote as being sour grapes or flaming MS, he's just making an observation.

WP7 is NOT a new platform it replaces Winmo 6.5, Winmo has been there forever however ANDROID is the new platform.

By your same reasoning we can also say we dont need froyo because eclair is just as good.

Cynicism at its highest form.

I am sure MS doesn't want consumers to think of Windows Phone 7 as a new version of Windows Mobile 6.5. Otherwise they would have called it Windows Mobile 7.0, retained multi-tasking and cut-paste, and not scrapped the old design completely. If the world needed MS mobile OS, WinMo7 would have made a much bigger impact, given it was early to the party. Instead consumers jumped ship at the earliest opportunity they had. MS is not bringing anything new to the party, the features are behind those of market leaders, and even a step back from Microsoft's own MinMo6.5. Basically lipstick on a pig.

Actually, the rename came with 6.5. 6.1 was the last version called "Windows Mobile", the current version is in fact Windows Phone 6.5.

They won't even let WP6.5 HD2 get a WP7 upgrade, they want a clean break.

I condone a clean break for them. There are (in my mind) 5 contenders right now; iOS, Android, WP7, RIM and WebOS. The only 3 of those that interest me as my day to day, only device are iOS, WP7 and WebOS. WebOS is only one 2 phones, neither of which I like, and so that really just leaves WP7 and iOS. I know that iOS will work for everything I want. I already have an iPhone 1 and my roommate has the 4, so I know that I would be happy with it.

WP7 needs to answer a couple of questions for me, namely the materials used (I basically don't want a mostly plastic phone. I like the iPhone 4, Droid 1, and that Moto Devour, I want a metal/glass phone), whether it will work at all with OS X, and what the app situation is going to look like. I remember when the Zune was first coming out that there was a rumor that Microsoft was going to do something like scan your iTunes library and provide their own copies of your DRMed songs. Something on that level (not necessarily that) would be interesting.

It's definitely a new platform. It is completely incompatible with and nothing like 6.5.

ive been thinking the very same thing while reading through this thread. my god, why cant people get that through their skulls? XP and win7 are vastly different and not very software compatible but no one bashed them for making it (other than the regular stuff), why is this any different? im interested in seeing wp7 for myself, ive used the iphones and they arent bad. android is the new thing at my work, but i still have a few things that bug me about it. i still use my winmo 6.1 phone because that is what i like, and really hope wp7 will be an upgrade to it. otherwise ill probably go android eventually. having choices has never been a bad thing, and MS coming out with a new mobile OS version is nothing different than android doing the same thing. complete rewrite or major update is irrelevant.

the majority of apple users use an iphone right? that leaves Windows users either on Black Berries or Android. Why would windows users want a Win7 phone?

Apple computers only make up 5% of desktop users, but they make up a larger portion of the laptop market and a significantly larger portion of the phone and personal media player market. You dont NEED an Apple computer to use their independent gadgets. In fact you dont need any computer to use most gadgets, it just adds to the overall experience. Thats another reason (for me) why Android is better than most.
I can go to ANY computer with web access and set up my contacts and calendar events in gmail, and it will all happen on my phone as well. It also pulls pics from Picasa automatically when you go into the phone album viewer.
Automatically uploading a pic you take? That I'm not so sure. But given the poor quality of most cell cameras its not a big deal either way.
