I really enjoyed The Witcher 2, but the story wasn't that great. The main villain was practically hidden the entire time until he was needed to conveniently end the game.

Yeah I hate games that make me fight the villian at the end of the game! Oh wait....

I'm not sure what exactly the complaint is here.
You meet up with him in Act 1, if you go Roche's path you hunt down his motivations and underlings, the you can choose to fight him at the end.
That's as often as you see Irenicus in BG2, and a little more than Saverok in BG1 for comparison.

Played a bit more of The Witcher 1. Figured out the combat, I think I'm still on the intro portion though because the game feels super linear right now. Not sure if I'll finish this one, but plan to give it a few more go's.

Try to make it at least into Act 2 (inside Vizima and the swamp) before you give up. It has some rough edges but that's where the story really starts to get good.

The Witcher 1 is a great game but I'm not sure how well it has aged. Been a while. Antway if you decide to go on the Witcher 2 I'm sure you will be greeted with a warm welcome and a nice preparation for the Witcher 3

I have no problem with end bosses. The boss fight in The Witcher 2 felt very weak and disconnected because of how out of touch the main villian was throughout most of the game. Far-away villians like in LOTR touch base with the reader/player as an ominous presence throughout the story to ground the reader/player in the plight they are facing. He was introduced and then kind of petered out until the very end. Didn't feel like it had much weight to it, which is my main complaint with the story. Even after defeating him, it was almost as if Geralt simply shrugged, walked off, and the credits rolled.

Part of my issues is that the developers seemed to think they needed a boss fight precisely because it is expected (to your first point) and had to stage, what I felt, was a unsatisfactory final encounter or they did not properly build to it. I'm sure you could go plot point by plot point and try to explain why Letho was properly built and so forth, but, for me, it simply did not leave a lasting impression.

I still really enjoyed the game, I don't rank the story high on my list though.

@ Subyman

That is what Geralt does. He is a superhuman mutant with augmented abilities and is frequently doped up on who knows how many potions constantly on the edge of society as an outcast. I think I'd shrug and walk away too.

As to why,
Letho was the one responsible for bringing the kingdom's to war/softening up against Nilfgaard, at the behest of a mage. That conclave of mages was pulling the strings.

Even Geralt shrugged off the ending 🙂

Its been nearly 2 years or more since I beat it, so I can't do a blow by blow with you guys over plot. I just remember it not resonating with me.

Fair enough. Though to be frank I don't think Letho was really intended to be a villian.
Is he doing a bad thing? Certainly and he's doing it for selfish reasons. But that's most everyone in the Witcher setting, including the Kings he's offed. Letho doesn't really care to be the bad guy but he knows Nilfgaard has him by the short hairs and by cooperating since the Emperor offered to throw support and refound Witcher schools, which he laments is becoming a dying breed. He protects Yennefer for Geralt, spares Geralt after Geralt tried to kill him, and later protects Triss if you don't. Heck you can let him go if you don't think he deserves death.

That's what I enjoy about these games, some great characterizations. Nobody is a saint, nobody is completely evil.

Honestly I let Letho go on my first playthrough and I will probably do so again if I get that far on my current game which I am stuck on the first fight with Letho on regular difficulty settings.

The huge difficulty spike at certain times in this game is odd but I am not fundamentally opposed to the concept in video games whether RPG or FPS or strategy or simulation.

You know you want a game badly when you watch a youtube gameplay video and halfway into it you got your fingers on WASD keys and start pressing...

I just finished GTA V which was great but it's an appetizer compared to W3.

Just an FYI, the ultra quality seen in these videos does not constitute the final ultra quality, as the YouTuber's build wasn't the final build.

From what I've seen it doesn't look that amazing graphics wise. Perhaps on par with GTA 5 and the newest Dragon Age. Of course it's the gameplay that will matter and any open world RPG from a reputable company is a must buy.

The videos so far are mostly low quality. Both TW1 and TW2 got color and lighting done amazingly well (which Gopher mentioned as being excellent in his playing of an earlier build), and that takes high quality video to be able to show off. So far, there's been very litle in the way of in-game high quality video also encoded at high quality. So, we shall see.

I just hope they get the mouse+kb UI worked out well. For the most part, the rest is looking pretty good, to me.

I agree the graphics in Gopher's video doesn't look amazing, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and wait until the final build or day-one patch is available. Even if the graphics aren't stunning, I'll still have a great time playing it. The gameplay looks really fun and I'm all for a huge open world to explore.
