MS's E3 coverage showed The Witcher 3 running on the Xbox One (I assume) and it looked amazing. I am sure they can squeeze more out of PCs. I can't wait.
 
This game has bada$$ written all over it!! 😀 I predict game of the year and possibly one of of the best RPGs of all time! :sneaky:
 
If they pull this off it could be RPG of the decade. Trying to contain my excitement.

On another note, I like Geralt's beard in the gameplay. Didn't think I would but that's one manly mutant.
 
Damn I'm excited for this! Hell I got a leave sheet ready to go already, just need a date to disappear from the world for awhile 😀:thumbsup:
 
Ok so watching gameplay videos of Witcher 2 it didn't look like something I'd want to play... at all. But everyone getting all excited is making me wonder... what makes this series so good?

It's a Mature RPG. That's what makes it good. I played a little bit of Witcher 1 and while I started getting into it I couldn't stay interested in the combat. I'm hoping that Witcher 2's improvements will make it more playable for me. I'm debating on whether or not to finish a slog through witcher 1 just to get the story.

That's kind of vague... do you mean the story is good & mature? The gameplay is what looked lame to me... running around and stabbing guys in an open setting never was my thing. I like the FO3 style where its more timed than button mashing. That's the key... the Witcher 2 looks like a button masher.

It's a well written story driven adult themed (politics/ethics/violence/sex/profanity) RPG. The gameplay isn't mind blowing although 2 is a big improvement over 1.

What exactly is timed in FO3? How you click your mouse to shoot? There is no timing at all. In The Witcher 2, you actually have to have timing. If you go in button mashing, you will die in 100% of the fights.

Witcher 2 was nothing like a button masher. Fall Out 3 was an FPS with a thin veneer of stats, there's no timing at all in it. Put the cross hairs on the target, click left mouse. Repeat. Hit Tab for VATS occasionally. Repeat.

I wasn't sure about what timing in FO3 was either .. maybe he was talking about VATS? But that requires even less timing. 😛

The story is great but its not for everyone. It's all about politics, no good or evil just human struggle. At the very end of the game many players choose not to fight the "main boss" because they can understand why he did it. Again the main story is all politics so its not for everyone, probably the closest game in terms of story would be the 1993's awesome Betrayal at Krondor. That said the sidequests are plentiful and you'll get your fair share of murder investigation, monster hunting, et cetera. They are still fairly mature in the sense that if you go in thinking people always tell the truth then you are very likely to get betrayed.

The gameplays looks like button smash but it really isn't. At least not until you get to a fairly high level. Getting hit really really hurt. Getting hit in the back can be an instant kill. Before you get shielding spells and high hp you want to play it very carefully. It is still a very fast paced combat though and I prefer Dark Souls-like combat. I hope CDRP would take some notes from it.

But yeah in the end its the settings, the story and the dialogue, which though can be rather cheesy at times, is still uniquely mature.

Heh, when I said "more timing" I didn't mean it was actually a good representation of timed, sorry. Just that it seemed like it took more thought to use the right weapon at the right time, and with SOME skill.

In FO3 / NV, I found myself switching weapons in the same battles (I.e changing weapons a few times as the fight changed situations), aiming to get the shot right for paralyzing the opponent, and VATS was part of timing.

The videos of Witcher 2 looks like you run up to an oppenent and just hit the same button to win. Maybe I just watched a bad video.

Also there weren't waves and waves of enemies generally in FO3 / NV. Only in "boss" type scenarios. In Witcher 2 it looked pretty standard. Fight a group, walk 15 feet, fight another group, etc.

Maybe someone can link a GOOD video I should be watching to get an idea? I'm not against picking up the game if I have the wrong impression.

I'm not sure I follow any of this "timing" issue.....but in Witcher 1 timing was definitely important. If you did not time your strikes correctly, you did not get the damage bonuses and special attacks. And those damages/special attacks stacked.

Witcher 1 was an incredibly intricate story, detailed and interesting. The gameplay was basic. But an RPG like Witcher1 succeeds due to the story it tells (and it's ability to immerse you in it)....not the gameplay. AIMHO

Like someone above already mentioned, you can often die very quickly from blows, especially those from behind. It is very easy to die to a small group of enemies if you aren't paying close attention. I found myself using manual dodge keys frequently during group fights. True timing was absolutely required. ie, dodge to disengage, run to gain some distance, cast a shield spell, re-engage when appropriate. Having played both games I would definitely say TW2 took waaaaay more skill during combat than did FO3. That said, I played FO3 in 08, and just played TW2 a year ago so perhaps I have availability bias - but that's how I remember it.

More like it would be very hard for a video to capture all the intricacies of Witcher 2 combat. There are very short windows for you to perform certain moves, specific combo's (ie: parry and strike back in one move) that require specific timing, and you gain more such skills as you level up (if you choose that skill tree). Likewise there's different methods of dealing with different enemies, especially if they have a shield or have a devastating close-up attack. Maneuver is often required to execute an effective attack.

You can also use the Witcher signs to set traps, bring an enemy over to your side temporarily, increase your defense, shoot fireballs, etc

If you just go around walking up to enemies pushing the same button, any number of level 1 enemies will kill you without breaking a sweat. Especially on the harder difficulties.

I actually really liked Betrayal at Krondor, but Return to Krondor not so much. =(
