We have a picture thread, so why not a video thread. Upload your work to Youtube (Vimeo, or some other service) and show us.

Include
-Video Title
-A little info about the video
-Date and Location Shot (if you know it)
-Camera you shot it with
-Video format (container, resolution)
-Editing program you used

I'll get the ball rolling. This is a CAM-SOT I did.
Title: CAMSOT at the Oakville Milton Flying Club
Date & Location: November 1st, 2009 @ Oakville Milton Flying Club
Camera: Sony XDCAM HD
Video Format: DV NTSC 480/60i 30mbps
Editing Program: Final Cut Express 4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hTSnXJdEE4

A CAM-SOT (Sound on Tape) is a style of news report where the reporter doesn't appear on camera and does not do a voice over. Your characters and pictures drive the story.

The video is compressed BTW so it looks squished from it's original 16:9. Aspect ratio is off. Just a fluke with Handbreak when it does DVCAM stuff. I should really use Adobe Encoder for that.

Nice! Good idea! I don't have anything good up, but here are some short random clips: (D90 from yesterday & the HV20 clips from a couple years ago)

1. Zeiss tester: Just got my first Zeiss (35mm M42, early 50's) in this week & hooked it up to my wife's D90. I didn't do the staircase fix on the footage, just right outta iMovie, but I absolutely LOVE the DOF/bokeh/overall PQ. It's wicked hard to get focused because it's so soft, but I went out and shot some more today to get a feel for it. I'm a totaly Zeiss fanboy now, haha:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjeH7uJ12E

2. My Lady Friend: Got a cheapo Merkury macro lens for my Canon HV20 (HDV cam) and tested it out with a ladybug. Again nothing special, just iMovie. Love that you can do crazy stuff like this at home:

http://www.vimeo.com/645817

3. Burn, Baby, Burn: Seeing how well the HV20 could handle nightshots. There are some tricks to get it even better, but with iMovie boosting the colors, it was pretty decent:

http://www.vimeo.com/611577

Most of my stuff is just goofing off with family & friends, but now that I have a thread to post to, maybe I'll upload something more interesting :D

The HV20 looks pretty good. I really would like to get a good consumer HD camcorder. Not that I'm complaining about getting to use the college's XDCAMs!!

Yeah the HV20 is a beast, my only complaint is that it's MiniDV tape...1:1 import + transcoding. I'm super impatient with import workflow, even the D90 gets me riled up because you have to rescale it before transcoding to nuke the jaggies out. Arggg! I can't wait to get a RED Scarlet and a RedRocket card, haha.

I've been considering an HFS-100 for awhile now, but the low-light capabilities just aren't as good. This January that may change with whatever Canon comes out with next. I'm also strongly leaning towards a 7D, maybe even a 5D, but I still need an HV20 type of cam for my crazy shots (like suction cup-mounted on car exteriors & stuff). I dunno. I'm also thinking about a QuickStreamHDV, which is a Firewire recorder, but those are like $799...might as well go the extra mile and get the HFS-100. Which I don't want to do because of lesser capabilities. Argg!! haha.

But overall, I love digital camcorders. It's just so much fun to play with them :awe:

1. High School Football highlight videos
2. See #1
3. Varying dates/locations
4. Sanyo VPC-FH1A
5. 1080p@60fps 24 mbps H.264/AAC
6. Nero to combine clips and output to mpeg2, then VideoReDo to compile scenes, then handbrake to re-encode back to h.264
a. VideoReDo is coming out with a new version to support editing h.264. I'll start using mp4box to concatenate clips, then use VideoRedo to compile scenes and output to highlight video and re-encode using handbrake.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation still uses DVCAM tapes but they're switching to Professional Disc soon because of that. I job shadowed there last month and the editor had me transferring stuff to tape. Even PD isn't the fastest thing in the world. I don't know why they won't use hard drives as XDCAM will take them.

Anyway... my next video is the vary first thing I did for college this year when I was still learning the camera and editing. I shot the first scene only but I edited the entire video.

This is just some family owned restaurant we went to that's near by the college. They make a damn good breakfast.

Nice job! :)

Well, tapes are (1) cheap, and (2) reliable. To store your footage, you just leave it on a $6 tape, instead of a $30 memory card or an expensive hard drive. Hard drives historically have some issues with camcorders because they contain moving parts, and cameras get jostled around quite a bit. My ideal setup would be a pair of Flash cards or SSD drives in RAID 1 Mirroring, but that'd be $$$.

RED looks like they have some pretty interesting drive configurations in their pipeline for the EPIC & Scarlet, so I'm really interested to see what they'll be doing with all that. Plus they have the RedRocket card, so after you import the footage from your recording medium (Flash, HDD, whatever), it turbocharges your transcoding time, which is really awesome.

MAN I need an Octocore rig for editing

The tapes though waste time and time = money. I think the main reason is the initial cost of the new equipment.

I was real interested in the Canon WD-H43, until I seen the price, :(.

How well does the Merkury work?

Here's a different camera: this one is to showcase Youtube's new 1080p streaming format.
Usually I film stuff at 720p@60fps, but 1080p sure is tempting...

Hover over the "HD" Icon to select either 720p or 1080p now.

For the price, it's AMAZING! It has its flaws, but for $27 (including a Macro AND a Wide-Angle!!) you just can't beat it. It costs as much as a pizza or two.

I was considering the WD-H43, but I read that it was extremely heavy, as well as extremely pricey. I also read through a bunch of reviews, and ended up buying a Raynox 6600 last week as an upgrade from my Merkury. I'd say it's worth it, and I'd also say it's the perfect HV20 wide-angle lens. The price is roughly the same as the Canon WD-H43, but I just really liked the footage out of the Raynox. I added a cheap step-up ring and a lens hood from a Canon XL-1H or something, looks pretty nice!

The Raynox and the Merkury are surprisingly close in footage, but you can definitely tell that the Raynox is better. The Raynox will probably be left on my HV20 99% of the time. I can't believe I waited this long to get a quality wide-angle lens, it makes SUCH a difference...

The video thread isn't getting any love. So sad.

Here's my latest product. A mini doc/profile I shot at the local Sally Ann. Shaky camera is due to me not bringing the tripod. I had originally planned to follow around their kettle coordinator but they neglected to tell me all the kettles were on private property. So I just pulled somebody from their office and profiled them. I used the tripod for the sitdown interview. Excuse my truly awful voice over.

What did you use for a mic on the interviewee in the office? Pretty clear audio!

I mostly shoot family stuff, but over break I'll try to film something I can post online :hmm:

I shot this video of the Toronto Donut Ride (happens every Saturday and Sunday) last Saturday, 19 December 2009 and edited it the following day. It was cold (-10 C not including windchill) and windy but the cameras I used were up to the task.

Cameras: GoPro HD mounted on the helmet, GoPro Wide mounted on the seatpost facing the rear. GoPro HD was set to the lowest HD resolution of 720p @ 30 fps.

Video Editing App: Adobe Premier Elements 8. I had to transcode GoPro HD's MP4 (H.264) into DV-MP4 so it can be accepted by Premier.

Here is the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqww1AKal-Q

The next test is probably to see how much better GoPro's 1080p mode is compared to 720p.

First movie I spliced together with my Canon HF11 (not sure what HD resolution it was shot in)... just goofing off in the back yard when a battle of epic proportions erupted. I'm really surprised I managed to hold the camera so steadily because the tension was killing me.

we got just under two feet here, but everything is mostly back to normal. nice and sunny today. only problem is that it heated up a bit and re-froze so residential areas are an icey death trap. :(

Some cool videos in this thread. This might be off-topic but...

I have just started out making HD videos with my Canon 7D and am wondering where everyone gets their music? I have uploaded a few videos to YouTube with classical or less-well-known artists and I always get an e-mail from YouTube saying the music has been removed from the video because it isn't permitted.

What are my options? I started using the Ghosts 1-4 albums from Nine Inch Nails as they released them under Creative Commons but I need some more upbeat music sometimes :D

I noticed a few of you used commercial music. How did you get away with that?

You're allowed to use up to 10 seconds of a song. It's one of the reasons why I don't upload everything I do. I have a full half hour documentary I did but there's some Beatles and Bollywood pop songs in there than run longer than 10 seconds. It's stupid to boss around amateur filmmakers like that when they purchased the song or they're not profiting off it. It gets to be nickel and dimeing at that point

Alternatively, you can rip songs out of youtube videos that others non-pro users have posted. If they've been up for a while, what's Youtube going to say?

Throw it on Vimeo or Viddler, they complain less ;)

I really don't understand why they remove commercial music from Youtube videos. imo, the best solution is to put the label's advertising on your video (instead of YOU putting ads on it and making the advertising money) - I buy music I hear on Youtube videos all the time! A few companies already do - here's a quick clip where the label put up their own advertising on my video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjeH7uJ12E

That way, I get to use the music and they get the money from (1) advertising, and (2) a purchase, if anyone decides to buy it.
