They were probably impressed that the sacred shrine in Karbala was not destroyed and that the US colonel paid his respects to the local cleric there.

That's nice to see, but after Saddam is gone those very same clerics will undoubtedly issue fatwahs against the U.S. "occupiers". Ya gotta love those religious fundies...

We had a great relationship with the Shah because we took the rightful leader out of power and put the Shah to secure oil in the middle east(I am not implying that is what we are doing now)
The revolt was because the people of the land weren't too happy with our puppet government.

I must admit that it's rather odd to see the word "ayatollah" used in a positive context. Those of us who were around in 1979 came to relalize that the Ayatollah Khomeini was the personification of evil, the Bin Laden of his time, as it were.

The Ayatollah was no worse than the Shah, if you were an Iranian. About the only difference between the 2 were which Iranians were more repressed. Strangely enough, after 20 years Iran has evolved to become relatively free and increasingly Democratic, that's without the revolution. Would the Shah have accomplished this?
