Stab in the dark here, have you tried different NB voltages including auto ?

And with your Corsair memory more voltage might not equate to higher Mhz depending on which IC are used.

Hopefully someone here might have some other idea's for you.

Hi there,

Yesterday i recieved these parts for an upgrade for myself.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz 1333FSB Socket 775 4MB Cache
OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC
Asus P5N-E SLI 650i Socket 775
Leadtek PX8800GTS 320MB DVI PCI-E


I've built hundreds of systems so was not worried, but we always dread the beeps etc and non-boot nightmares that usually don't happen.
Well, To cut a long story short, it would not boot.

The motherboard manual was useless as it didn't state the codes for the beeps you get when it won't boot so I was disconnecting things til I found the issue. It turns out one of the OCZ sticks causes it not to boot. I literally try one and it doesn't work, do a straight swap for the other one and it works. I guess this means i have a faulty RAM module, yes?

I was about to RMA it when I bumped into this forum and this thread. I can't read it all but I see a lot of mention of different voltages. i have everything at stock voltages.

Basically at the moment I want to know if you guys think that one of the RAm modules is faulty or if I should try upping the voltage on them to try and get them both working? It's a pain RMA'ing the modules as my PC will be out of action for the time it takes them to send me some new ones :(

It sounds like a faulty module....But to rule it out, boot the comp with the good module and go to bios and set the ram voltage and timings manually, shut down, install other module.
Make sure they are in both black or both yellow slots.

sometimes one module might need slightly more voltage than the other, doesn't happen often but does happen.

If comp boot with both sticks in, run memtest86+ for a while to confirm there are no problems.

If it still won't boot after setting things manually it probably a fautly stick..RMA time!

thx mate, I'll try it out tonight.
I've ordered another 2gb as I figure I may need it anyway, then at least if i RMA the first lot, I'll be able to run the machine while I wait for the replacement.

Ok, just so i can go home and try straight away, what settings should I put in the BIOS?
i should stick the voltage up to 2.1 - 2.2 right? then manually put the timings in. What do you recommend timing wise?

Yeah try 2.17v and 4-4-4-15 2T or what it say's on the sticker on the modules?
Make sure you set the command rate to 2T as this can be a major issuse!

I've tried different nb voltages.

is there any way to check the brand of the chips without taking the heat spreader off?

This is a long shot, but has anyone set up an Areca 1220 raid controller on one of these boards? The Areca manual says that during boot up I should see a prompt to enter the McBios Raid Manager. However I do not see this prompt.

I have a video card in the first PCI-E slot and the Areca in the second slot. Is this Raid card even compatible?

hi m3jsh1,

So I take it the raid card is a 4x pci-e and it is in the 2nd 16x pci-e slots, if that is the case you would have to flip the ez selector card for to enable the 2nd slot.....But your video card in the first slot would drop to 8x and not 16x like it should be.

Thats if it works at all, this board can be quirky even under normal conditions.

Oh! I didn't realize I had to physically flip that EZ selector card. Let me try that and get back to you! :)

edit: Interesting... After switching the EZ selector card I receive two short beeps over and over again. And when I switch back to single card mode it's fine.

sorry then i dont think there much you can do, besides using the motherboards raid functions.

the board does have 0, 1, 0+1, 5, jbod. a bit limited compared to your raid caid card :)

or maybe another raid card instead.

P.S. I can't believe what a memory hog Vista is! with the 1gig module in, running any game is like the slow-death with the disk accessing constantly, switch to XP and run the same game with the same settings and it's silky smooth with 1 gig. What the hell is Vista doing with all my RAM? ;)

No probs mate, sorry to hear its a bad stick, I hate RMA's

Yeah Vista is a hog, thats why I dual boot XP64 and Vista64 :)

hmm. I don't think I'm gonna replace my RAM just to (hopefully) gain another 700MHz on my CPU. My parents have a different kit in their computer though, so I might have to swap them over when I go home for christmas :p

Either swap them, or just add the extra 2 sticks!

But running 4 modules on this MB is a whole another issue... as you know...

I'm looking to buy some memory for my Asus P5N-E SLI board tomorrow. The original RAM I purchased I can't get to work / be stable when doing anything memory intensive, i.e. folding, games, MS Money, etc. For normal ops, surfing the internet and checking email the system works fine, but that's not why I pumped another $1000 into my rig. I had CORSAIR CM2X1024-6400 memory in my system. It's listed on the CORSAIR site, but not on the ASUS QVL list. Does anyone have any suggestions for replacement memory. I'm lloking for a matched pair of ram to get the system around 2GB. I'm looking to not spend more than $200.

I strongly recommend G.Skill HZ series, as I use them in my rig at 2.01V.

But.... before you spend the money, make sure you are running your memory at the proper voltage, and set the timings and voltage manually in BIOS.

If this is your memory...

...make sure that you are running it at the 2T command rate. Ignore the T1 in the specs.

Also, set the CPU voltage manually in BIOS (not more than 1.35V), and set the NB voltage to 1.56V, if nothing else helps.

If that doesn't work, get G.Skill HZ's.
