i read about that store that was selling those. somebody bitched to intel and they made them stop.

core2, what does the 401 bios fix?

oh and the stupidest thing about the p180 is no speaker. theytook quiet pc one step too far.

It doesn't seem that he stopped. He still has 18 for sale.....

oh. i was reading in another forum from some guy who received one and then another guy who got one said he finally emailed intel and they were not happy and he implied that they were going to stop. i guess not :)

intel told him those have no warranty.

Yeah, but this guy is offering a 90 warantee with a free heatsink and fan. Maybe he is just the Intel clearing house for these types of chips.

I'm still here. UPS arrived and I am in the process of getting the board ready for insertion into the case. You will have to let me know how you used a flash drive to update your BIOS.

No not yet. My original OC profiles where still there after a Clear CMOS shows there is separate storage for that. Maybe later I want make sure the 2nd drive boots and it functional before I start playing around. I figure, I found the bios you guys test it out and report back OK

Do you have a usb flash drive? Its the best thing I have a four GB Crucial Gizmo overdrive on the root of the drive I copied windows boot files then I created folders for all my computers within those folders I made folders that I put my bios, OC profiles, Flashing Utilities you name it great tool to have. Just connect it boot to the bios and access your files from there.

I was going to pick up a 1GB usb flash drive and copy the bios and flash utility. Do I need to copy windows boot files too? Will 1GB be big enough or do I need a bigger usb flash drive??

Plenty big enough and no you don't have to copy windows boot files I just do that in case the HD can't be accessed I just boot from the flash drive and use my utilities to fix what ever the problem may be

Ok problems here. The old ONE long and THREE short which means a memory problem. I have two sets of memory. Geil PC2-6400 800MHz and CORSAIR PC2-6400 800MHz. I use both sets, both slots, single slots, and I still get the same error code. What else can I try?

Unplug your keyboard and mouse all usb devices 1 stick of ram in the a2 slot and power it on and see what happens

Its OK now. It was not the memory but the VGA card - Doh! I moved my PCIEx card from the number one slot to the secondary slot and it would not boot. Since I moved it back to the one slot, it booted fine.

be back in a bit John, off to do my multi boot with vista.

Nice. I've been running an XP and Vista dual boot for a few weeks now. I really like Vista and have had no compatibility issues.

How's the speed compared to xp and bench marks

In terms of daily use it feels a lot faster to me with opening windows, moving between programs. I don't game so thats no issue to me but I've heard games run slower. I haven't done any benchmarks in it.

Would you please give Ryan a few tips on how to install it right.
He's going to spend weeks trying to get xp back

i think i've got it. modifying the boot.ini now. apprently the partition got hidden somehow so vista didn't do what it was supposed to. xp still uses ntldr and boot.ini but Vista has it's own loader.

I know one thing you have to make sure is that both XP and Vista are on Primary partitions. If not the dual boot won't work right. I use partition magic to set them both as primary. Otherwise it was as simple as installing Vista for me and it setup the dual boot perfectly.

thanks, somehow my xp became hidden with partition magic. i made a mistake by then loading vista from cd on boot. having both drive letters and installing vista while in XP would have been the better option. i do appreciate the help. :)

I did not change the BIOS yet. Still trying to get into Windows. The system will POST and then it just stays a blank screen. Need to check the position of my drives.

Now my problem is whether to wait for the e4xxx to become widely available or pick up an e6300 or e6400 now. Does anyone have any ideas when the e4xxx's are gonna be available??

tough call, post purchase i think with this board the e6300 may have been the better deal as i can hit 3.5ghz with the multi set as an e6300. (and it was about $40 less than what i paid for mine) the e4300 or e4400 wouldn't make too much sense with this board. don't get me wrong but those seem perfect for boards that have issues with a higher than 400 fsb (imho) the higher multi is nice but with the price that they are currently going for an e6300 or e6400 seem similar in price. frankly anyone interested in the cheapest core 2 route i would have to think that the asrock dual775 vsta makes a lot of sense. buy an e4400 and that board for probably around 220 and use your old agp and ddr mem. then upgrade those slowly if you feel the need to. should be able to hit 3ghz with relative ease on stock cooler with that setup.

doht, nothing like responding to an ancient post to make one look like a moron :p

Man this sucks. I just went to switcth out my SATA cables and one of the SATA HEADER SLOTS (nr 2 black) came off with the cable. This board has to go back but not until I get my other one back from Newegg.

Hello all

Long time lurker first time poster. Just finished reading all 51 pages of this post. I'm an UberNoob to over clocking the CPU and Memory. Done some light OC on vidieo cards. I just wanted to thank everyone who had input in this post. There is some fantsic info in here. As stated, I have never done this before and will have some questions. I have included a screen shot of CPUZ and SpeedFan taken with everything in it stock state.

My first question is this, should I start my OC witht he CPU or the Memory?

<a href="http://usera.imagecave.com/bear254/PreOCscreen.JPG"

I will add to my sig as I gather more info

i would start with cpu, core2 performance is more sensitive to cpu speed then mem speed. ddr2 800 with tight timings will give you as good of performance as higher speed ram costing far more

and BTW welcome aboard.
