i am going with intel p965. it is a damn shame that nVidia has such a major defect on such a common function of the motherboard.

That is for the 680i which uses a different SB as the 650i does The 650i uses the old 410/430 MCP51 chipset which is on the 570 platform and had no problems. These online stores usually allow you to exchange for a different MB. I have the P5B deluxe it doesn't clock as easy as I found this one to do but is a little faster overall except for graphics but not far behind at all. So I would recommend the P5B Plus or the Deluxe if you want the P965 chipset. Let me know if you have any problems setting it up. Also browse through the Asus forum and see what your in for. 975 chipset is still the best bet for your needs IMO

that thread is started for an AMD platform chipset but a lot of other users chimed in. considering i had the same exact error messages, the failed write delay ones with the evolution going next to the BSOD with the exact same error message and then to simple straight up restarts during data transfer, i think it is an nForce issue.

there is a fix for it in xp but im nervous since one user said after a few weeks the same issues started coming back. so im in the air right now. i made the changes in xp and i can transfer files and multitask to no end right now.

2 seagate 80gb barricuda in raid 0. haven't had any issues at all doing anything until now. pretty small .docx files. shouldn't be a problem. doing it now with no OC and it seems to be ok.

i have definitely heard that. my last pc is and was an nforce2. i used these same drives on that. i wonder if this wasn't some type of issue with the parallel port on a high fsb. i really haven't had any data transfer issues of note.

Ok, I've been working at getting a stable OC. I've just been running ORTHOS for about 5min. after my settings to make sure it doesn't lock up. So far I've only gotten 710/1400 it keeps locking up above that.

I understand th 1:1 ratio but how does that make things smoother? If I up my memory above the 1:1 should I be shooting for another ratio to make things smoother for the bus speed?

Again not all CPUs posses the same OC capability. If you can get the week code we can narrow your particular CPU to OC abilities. There's a decent OC database that Hardforums keeps for Core 2 Duo CPUs. Check it here:

In bios I had the following voltages:
1.40 vCore +100mv
Memory should be 2.1 or 2.2 for your sticks. Which equates to something like 2.147 and 2.238 or something like that in bios. I run at the 2.2 setting.
NB should be either 1.36 or 1.504 depending on what you can get stable in your system.
I was able to stay stable at 1.504 or so.

FSB + memory bus speeds where unlinked and at 1600 & 800 repectively.

Keep an eye on temps in the bios.
My temps were 42 and 33 for the CPU and motherboard respectively. So try to get your system to stay that cool in bios.

I think the keys to this board (and like most OCs) is enough voltage + keeping temps in check.
I had to try a lot of NB voltage & vCore settings before I got my system stables.
The break through was solving the NB then going back and seeing what vCore worked.
The memory was trivial b/c I looked it up on the crucial website.
But with Corsairs you have to look on the label. There website is sometimes off.
My Dominators I had before said 2.2v on their website and Newegg it said 2.1v.

Thanks for the info. I'm actually on the Hardforums all the time and had seen your info. Well my chip is L625 and everyone with that chip had to go 1.5vcore to get a decent speed... so that may be part of it. Corsair has my memory rated @ 2.1v but I can play with that a bit if need be. I'll keep at it.

what coolers fit this board, im looking for silent.

i would preferably like the ninja revision b, does this fit easily?

if not would the scythe mine fit?

i have ordered the zalman cnps at however other memebers of another orum said that its quite a loud cooler, so now im wanting to go for a scythe cooler.

any comments suggestions welcome.

And folks I also believe lower cpu and core temps are from the use of Arctic coolings MX-1 thermal compound and the Freezer7 Pro. I have 3 Core 2 Duo's and they all run cool and all are using the same setup.

i just gotta ask, are you able to do orthos small fft on that? that has got to be the best OC chip i have ever seen. and your bios vcore is? absolutely amazing my friend.

Real silent. I have 3 of them. I have used AS5 but, I have had better results with the MX-1 that is applied on the cooler already. They just use way to much from the factory. No, doesn't have to point up I have mine pointing out the back just have to trim part of the fan housing and bend up one of the bottom fins real easy

Arctic cooling Freezer7 Pro

I agree 100%. I started with the stock cpu cooler and my temps went up above 70C which is way out there as far as intel CPU's are concerned.

After I got the Freezer 7 Pro, my temps at full load went down to 48C and I live in florida and the ambient temp is around 80 degrees. Man is it a lousy winter.

But really, the freezer pro is quiet, a little hard to install until you are used to it (I came from AMD which has a different attachment system - much easier), but overall a great preformer. I would also recommend a chipset cooler (active or passive). Heat pipes. The Thermalright HR-05/HR-05 SLI either with a fan for serious OCing or no fan for the extremely quiet PC. If you do use a fan, I would also look at the AcoustiFan DustPROOF Noiseless Computer Fan - 70mm. I got two fans and 1 each of the HR's. The HR-05 for the Northbridge and the HR-05 SLI for the Southbridge. You do not kneed active cooling on the SB but it does get hot to the touch.

Its to bad I corrupted by BIOS on my board and had to RMA it (ASUS need to go to a socket BIOS instead of the soldered one). I guess ASUS figured that there was no way to do this but once again, I proved them wrong.
