Lies, dammit! All lies! There are no particle acceleration experiments! Damn conspirators.

Pay them no mind, some people are still in a tizzy over Pluto being demoted.

..wasen't that decision over turned??

dwarf planet. GRRR!
Hey, big deal. It's still got the honor of having a probe sent to pay it a visit, no matter what we choose to call it. I could call it a big blob of skunky cheese, but it would still continue to be a smallish chunk of icy rock.
Fact is, Pluto happens to share a lot of qualities with Kuiper Belt objects, many of which have a 3:2 orbital resonance with Neptune.

Pluto just happened to be seen first, and they decided at the time to name it as a new planet. I wonder what might have happened if something like Sedna had been spotted before Pluto. Sedna has an extremely elliptical orbit, and takes over 10,000 years to complete one complete orbit.

Galaxies, ours is the milky way
Lots and lots of galaxies.
and perhaps an episode on miscellaneous: planets beyond the solar system, expansion of the universe.

Don't get me wrong - I agree with you. But, in the past few years, it's seemed that the history channels and discover channels have really watered down their content. Heck, they have absolute garbage on their masquerading as science, ie. haunted houses, dog psychics, etc.

They might mention something about the big bang, but they don't want to offend the 50% (or greater) of their viewers who don't believe in the big bang. *sigh*

The only big bang I believe in is your mom!

Except she said that yours was so small, it was a mere cosmic string fragment, which might not even exist at all!

And of course, <obligatory crude black hole remark>.

Man, this is bad. I just envisioned some smack-talk yo-mamma contest between theoretical astrophysicists.
Yo mamma's so stupid, she thought that a neutron star was some fresh actor in the movie Tron!

The Flying Spaghetti Monster could also be called an "alternative theory." Do you idly dismiss our Noodly Master?

Of course, why didn't I see that! There is a possibility there - let's discuss!

Oddly, more of a possibility than the electric universe. The electric universe (or so it seemed to me after reading for about 25-30 minutes) seems to make a lot of statements which are quite easy to dismiss as being false. In fact, I found much of it painful to read - if any of my own students confused some of the physics terms that I saw misused, I'd be ashamed. Regardless, it's true that we know less about gravity than most people realize. Nonetheless, at the same time, our knowledge of the other three forces is incredible. But, the one thing I realized most: many of the believers are almost fanatical - on one of their forums, I noticed that they spent a great deal of time discussing how to argue and debate. Here's a method that works: show me that your theory makes predictions, and test those predictions. Show me that our gravitational theories are wrong based on those predictions.

edit: what does the electric universe say about CERN? How about the search for the Higgs boson?

Then go ahead and post the statements that are quite easy to dismiss as being false on the thunderbolts forum. At least back up what it is that you are saying.

All they do is talk about the planets, and it is the same crap I've heard since high school. Gee, did you know an asteroid caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? Yeah, I saw "Armageddon" too. There's been I think 4-5 great extinctions on earth and the only one we care about is the one caused by an asteroid, because there were movies made about it.
Did you know Venus while it look similar to Earth is a living hell? Yeah, back in sixth grade in that national geographic.

I agree with you about that. I was interested until i found that none of the shows have delt with something as far away as the Kuiper Belt yet. Hopefully the other posters are correct and they will to expand their focus

I mean if it were called "The United States" and if they concentrated on West Virginia, wouldn't we all want to move on by episode 5?

They are trying to break the beliefs of the 25% of people in this country that still think that the Sun revolves around the Earth.

Want to read an alternative theory to the formation of our galaxies, planets, etc? An idea that gravity doesn't dominate the cosmos?

Check out,
http://www.electric-universe.org/

Plenty of follow up links from there.

I don't think they are teaching this stuff in school ...

They usually don't parrot crackpots in school for a reason...

You don't have a clue ... did you even read it, or do you just normally jump to conclusions without justification? All I'm providing is an alternative theory. Don't be so quick to follow the "leaders" ...

There's something which should also interest you and keep you busy for a while.

Why do we keep getting so many old threads bumped lately? Is it because the search function doesn't sort by date anymore? (Again.)
