It's not the best outcome if it rewards Trump.

It doesn't really and basically assures that when he tries it again the other party will take a hard line in response to get him to back down. We're going to get a bombastic WH press release about total victory or whatever but the people farther down the line are going to get tired of worrying about if he's going to put them out of a job randomly one day.

Disagree. We've seen this time and time again. And this is why people voted for Trump.

The best outcome would have been for Mexico to say nope, you back down and that's the only option.

Sovereign nations are going to look out for their own best interests. Doing nothing while Trump says you did something in return for him totally backing down is certainly a win from their perspective.

Me, I'm ready for the tariffs. I have about 8 decent size avocados in the fridge. :colbert:

I'd kill for 8 boxes of 60 eggs each right now so I'd be good for 2-3 months

lmao one of the big selling points of crypto was that it would be a hedge for when the markets are in trouble

whole thing is absolutely eating shit right now

I may not be the smartest person around but I'm glad I have enough IQ to stay away from that dumpster fire!

So Mexico is sending national guard to the border?

I imagine there is a non-zero percentage of national guard rank and file and commanders on the cartel payroll.

The Mexicans have done similar deployments before under Biden. We just asked them to and they did it without making the financial markets order Tums by the dump truck.

I am talking about Trump failing so he is weaker at home. This will give him strength. Like I said, this is just supporting his power. To me, that is bad. You are thinking way way too rationally about these other government's own successes rather than the overall big picture of Trump.

I stand by this is a bad outcome.

If somebody takes delight in panicking you every 5 minutes for his own amusement you will rapidly become exhausted with that person and want him to go away. Trump fatigue from 1.0 but on fast forward. I would not classify this as a win for him but a lesser loss than the country rioting when auto production shuts down.

Headlines - Mexico agrees to send troops to the border and tariffs are paused.

That's a win for Trump, so that equals bad for America. And bad for the world, because it will keep Trump buoyed up here.

Again, you are missing the point entirely. Trump JUST got elected again and he has always been that person. The logic is, yeah Trump can be a bit crazy, but he gets things done. You have completely failed to understand that at all. It's exactly why he won. I find that concerning.

He lost the election in 20 in no small part because the electorate was just over him and the drama. They decided to forget that in 24 but the Trump show is back on the TV and it's the only channel he will let you watch.

Trump's irrational hatred of Canada may be a barrier to finding a similar off ramp there though:

Wrong. Only because the drama and effects of covid as well. The combination.

Again you're looking back to 2020 when he just won a few months ago. This is four years later. You got to get with the times.

Not living in the present makes absolutely zero sense.

Since overdose deaths in the US already fell last year, for the first time ever, I wonder how long Trump takes credit for it saying his threat of tariffs is what caused the drop.

Honestly I was hoping that Mexico and Canada would just turn around and say that they're imposing tariffs on all US goods until something is done about the flood of illegal weapons coming from the US. I know that estimates place the number of US smuggled weapons used by the cartels to about 90%.

To date, data underlying Mexico’s dramatic pronouncements — that as much as 90 percent of all guns recovered on Mexican soil originated in the U.S.; that as many as 597,000 weapons slip over the border each year, most from American gun manufacturers — has only been shared in aggregate form by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Canadian statistics are a little harder to come by but it's probably in the same range as Mexico.

Toronto police have found that about 85 per cent of all crime guns they recover come from the U.S., and that the top states they originate from include Florida, Arizona and Texas.

Statement from the Mexican president in fact contains that she got a commitment from Trump to work on cutting this off.

avocados can't last enough on the fridge.... I tell it as experience as South American. It only last two weeks in best case before starts to degradate T_T
Yes, but refrigerating a not-too-ripe (but ripe enough to eat) avocado does prolong it's edibility considerably. It's pretty critical to get it in the fridge at pretty much the right time. Similar tactics work for bananas. Apples seem to keep in my fridge for virtually months. I don't bother refrigerating oranges.

Yes, these are intertwined but replace COVID with "I might be randomly out of a job one day because he says so".
Nope. The tariffs thing with Mexico is just going to buoy him. All they are gonna see is MEXICO IS SENDING 10,000 TROOPS TO THE BORDER!

Good for her but it is a word of mouth "promise" from Trump, which is about as useful as a shit filled diaper

I certainly won't argue that his word is worth anything. Though he might well hang the gun lobby out to dry because they are irrelevant to him. ATF could just start yanking FFLs on his say so.

After the election I finished a couple appliance purchases that I'd been putting off and we both got new computers. I can get through the next four years without buying any major durable goods barring anything unexpected.
I might be able too as well. Just plowed more money into my old car than it's worth. The contact at the service shop said it's now like a "new car" (it's a 1997 Mazda)! Had the not-working remote door and alarm ripped out last week, am having a new one installed in a few weeks. My computers are pre-pandemic but serviceable. Will see what comes up but AFAIK won't need major stuff the next 4 years.

Canada isn't planning to dick around..

Canada plans to shut down the power transmission lines...

On SuperBowl Sunday.

New York, New England, the Midwest, and parts of the Pacific Northwest, will go dark.

That's a power move! (pun intended).

Oh and for those that don't know, Canada supplies 32% of the electricity to the United States. And they said the lights WILL go off, if Trump doesn't stop. When you add that to the oil exports, dark days are ahead. (pun intended.)

Eggs are on my shopping list (Costco). I got lucky a month ago and snagged 24 there. I don't like my odds on finding them there now but I still have a dozen.

I just can't see that happening. That risks people lives. No way it's just shut off.
