But. China will have access to the machines to build the chips. There are export controls on them.

It sounds like the US has agreed to relax these export controls in return for China issuing permits for rare earth materials that withheld would have idled multiple different American industries and soon. The Chinese students thing is just cover.

Tried to find the agreement. But have not

But this would surprise me

There is no text and Bessent declined to provide Congress any details. Some reporting indicated the us will relax “tech” export controls which most people are interpreting as semiconductor tech since that’s what Beijing wants. They didn’t trade away their best leverage for nothing.

What are these rare earths that we need for cars??

Wasn't MTG talking a bunch of nonsense that we have our own rare earths that we can mine for??

They are the only ones that invested in the whole production chain. 85% of global refined light rare earth and 100% of global refined heavy rare earth are produced in China.

Magnets for dozens of small motors in every vehicle.

Technically true but the economics are bad. Mountain Pass is open but it's been kept so by DOD spending because they can't afford to rely on imports for their stuff.

This is true. Until recently all the concentrate we mined got shipped to China. MP is building out some stuff now but the capacity is going to be a fraction of what the Chinese had and not even close to replacing the imports.

So... can we resume the current points they got...
USA: gets Chinese goods, but cost 55% more
China: gets the semiconductor tech, still, can finally reach EUV an even more, can sell more stuff to USA?

So... USA gets fked?

The markets make no sense:

1. No trade deals
2. Tariff increase on just about everywhere
3. Money outflow from US increasing.
4. Bond market in turmoil
5. Companies laying off workers en masse
6. Cooked unemployment numbers
7. Big Beautiful Trainwreck incoming

A meteor is going to hit the US so we're bullish and pushing for all time highs??

Anyone got an idea wtf is going on??

Where should the money go? Gold yea, after that? Everyone is on the line to deliver %'s and if they're not competitive they dont have a job next year.... So its frantic neurotic lemmings just ignoring the facts. When this goes boom it goes BOOM.

Yeah, because good luck staying competitive on the global market if all imported goods/materials from China has a 55% tariff compared to a competitor which don't.

Yes, that number is correct. I've been getting a few emails from companies to buy before they increase prices. Pre-tariff inventory burn down is coming and then everybody gets to pay more. Big companies are just gonna price their way out of it, lots of small biz is fuuuuuuucked.

That awkward scenario where you are unsure of whether to root for tariffs to continue to be an anchor (somewhat ) on his approval ratings or cheer for tariffs to be peeled back, economy roars back to life and all is forgiven by the electorate.

Trump quitting tariffs is probably on the level of me quitting like whiskey or breathing. Technically possible but does not seem very probable in the near future. That man loves tariffs more than his children, an admittedly low bar.

Inquiring minds wanna know.. scotch, rye, bourbon, japanese or canadian?

Oh any Tennessee whiskey? Jack perhaps??

Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof in both offerings are excellent IMO. JD 10 and 12 year also good but harder to find. Never got a taste for Dickel really but it's polarizing.

I recently bought 4 cases of Evan.. and someone in the store told me, I might get stopped at the counter because of tariffs.. lol.

If only they realized it's made in America.. but with the average common sense.. wouldn't surprise me if they tried to pull a 55% tariff price increase!
