The Things I Do For SETI...

This whole Berkeley thing has really got me torqued. :| I want to set up those remaining machines at my friend's store, but cannot due to the whole thing with Berkeley. I thought I would copy some WU's to disc and get them started that way, but I am having that problem again where I go near the computers and the 3.5" drives fail. :| So I am currently zipping up WU's and e-mailing them to a web e-mail so I can download them to the machines there directly. :|

BTW, for those that have their proxies listed, are any of those ones that we can point machines to on a long term basis? I do not want to point them somewhere, only to have to go change it in a month or two.

Hmm, have you tried setting it to connect to Berkeley directly? It's been lightning fast today :) I was in the same boat too, I had 5-6 computers ready to setup, but i couldn't get them to download any WUs.

I cannot do it right now, I am not at my friend's store. By the time I could get there, I suspect Berkeley will be bogged down again.

Berkeley seems to be in good shape at the time of this reply...so go for it. ;)

Steve, OK's server is long term.. just going through some trouble that I hope won't disparage him too much.

I feel your pain though..

In my opinion the best thing to do is take your user_info.sah file with you on a floppy.. set up Driver and the CLI.. and point it to
a Q.. They're all hosted or have dyn so if the IPs of the machines change, it will update on the next dns..

as for longevity.. well I can't answer that.. But I'd recommend OKs.
<wanted to add.. I know he's bogged down, but for remote assimilations it's still the best way to go. For home/work/neighbor assims, take your pick of Q's>

<< where I go near the computers and the 3.5" drives fail >>

Sounds like a case for X-FILES;)

Are these machines networked? How do they access the internet?

ShotgunSteve,
Try this, if you are using SETIDRIVER:

1. Point to a SETIQ like OKs.
2. Set SETIDRIVER up and let it setup the subfolders.
5. Startup SETIDRIVER
6. It will start, and may seem to hang up when trying to retrieve data. make sure that DOS window is the active one, and do a CTRL-C combination. That Wu will close, and SETIDRIVER will startup another one, and this one should download a WU and start crunching, and it will populate the others.

Seems to work for me. :)

Are the other machines already using a proxy?

Then I would just borrow 1 workunit from an existing installation and place it in the new machine as a subdirectory named 1. Before starting the service or rebooting, I would run SETI Driver with that borrowed workunit, change the setting of the cache & point it to a proxy with an existing queued workunits for you, hit transmit and it should download fresh workunits. To avoid the processing of duplicate workunit, I would stop SETI Driver, delete subdirectory 1, rename the highest existing subdirectory to 1 and reboot the machine. Your SETI Driver as service will process the new workunits.

Should I create a special service installation with a workunit for the rest of your Windows 98 machines;)

I am just going to try the download from web e-mail trick and see how that goes. Too bad Berkeley did not take up those corporations on their offers of setting up Mirrors. :(

Are you currently setting this up now? I could have you try a couple of things as well.

Ok's site only have 29 workunits queued for you, do you need more now?

No, I am at home right now. I will be trying to set this up again later this week, as my plans to try it tonight are not going to work out. I have enough on my home machine that I can e-mail several to myself on a web e-mail account, or perhaps upload them to the webspace that a friend set up on his site for me.

I assumed that you have your home computers on most of the time - especially when you're out there setting up new machine. Does your DSL provider put a cap on your usage?

If not, I would run SETI Q in your home machine to aid you in setting up. You could set it up tonight, point your home machines to it so it will setup a queue for you. Once you got it to download some workunits, change your SETI Q to maximize the number of workunits and also keep the Q alive by maximizing all the settings. After you maximize your Q's downloading abilities, you can store workunits by stopping your Q, moving all but one of the waiting workunits to a subdirectory (call it hold) then start the Q again & download and stock up.

Tomorrow, before going to your friend's place, Stop the Q, move all of your stock up workunits from hold to your q, start the Q, it should have more than enough workunits for you to distribute to your new machines.

Warning, if your Q was not setup to keep slive the clients and maximize the settings correctly, the excess workunits will disappear when you restart your Q. Keep a backup, just in case you need to do some tweaking. Just remember which workunits need to be work on to avoid duplicates. Also, if you plan on keeping your Queue account in OK's proxy, you should point your home Q to his proxy to avoid duplicate workunits.

I think I have it hammered down now. I am heading over in a couple of minutes to try and get everything up and running. I am in a slightly better mood this morning, so I will probably not heave a monitor through their window if I get frustrated... this time. ;) Wish me luck! :D

Good luck :)

If you need, you can set them to grab WUs from my queue if it comes to it

I have tried several different Queue's, and none of them would go. No idea why, all I know is that the trouble started with Berkeley's bandwidth problems. :(

I am here now, and about to try out the first machine.
