Plenty of deep red places in Cali too. Leave the coast/vacation hotspots/any of the major cities and you might as well be in buttfuck Alabama.

Honestly, every Californian should make a sojurn out to the *real* Norcal, you know that 1/3 of the state that's north of the bay area.

Plenty of secessionists, confederate sympathizers, and sovereign state types up there.

*Channels Mitt Romney* Rural/Urban divide is real my friends.
I really do love the drive up through redding and Oregon where I can see all the signs and license plate frames declaring "Welcome to the state of Jefferson!"

LOL no. Nice try.

I have to say the number of people not complying with basic mask standards in California has been shocking to me.

In NYC basically everyone complies except the ultra orthodox, who are gleeful super spreaders. If you forget them though I would say compliance is 85% or higher.
Socal (orange county and inland empire specifically) is just mind blowing how deliberately stupid they're being. I honestly feel fairly ok out in public in norcal, everyone seems to be following the recs fairly well.

- My "Aunt in Law" lives about 100mi east of redding deep in the "State of Jefferson". Have a bunch of nice merch.

Remember walking into a NAPA auto parts with an NPR shirt on and the first thing the guy behind the counter said was "You're not from a-round here, are you?"

During the Labor Day 4H they have a parade with a couple floats or lifted trucks with modded smoke stacks all flying old stars and bars...

That said, I've never had a truly bad experience with anyone up there so *shrug*

Go Tejas! And take Florida with you. Good luck guarding your borders from smugglers and pirates when the U.S. Navy refuses to help lol.

There's no way to know statistics on mask wearing. Personally (I'm in Berkeley CA) I see most wear masks. Some are not wearing them but I'm seeing them in situations that aren't obviously dangerous (maybe riding a bike, in a car, on the sidewalk) and they might get masked up if they get near anybody. Still, I don't like seeing people not masked. If I leave my property, I'm masked.

People in L.A., I don't know what's up with those folks. My nephew's there, I should ask him or his wife when I have the chance. I'm thinking that in 3 weeks L.A.'s gonna be as bad or worse than NY City was early on. Maybe a lot worse.

Last I saw (2 days ago) Alameda County (mine) had 30+% hospital bed occupancy open. But my surrounding counties except for S.F. are single digits. L.A.'s been at 0% for over a week.

If they can't figure out the vaccine distribution issues (the unexpected bottlenecks they've got now) 2021 could be worse than 2020 all in all for this pandemic.

True, I’m referring to San Diego specifically so I can’t speak to the rest of the state.

I was in Ocean Beach the other day (my old hometown!) and I would say mask wearing was well below 50%. Probably around 20-30%. It was absolutely bonkers. I’m not talking about people in cars either, purely talking about pedestrians on crowded sidewalks.

I think the solution is obvious, if potentially unpopular. A universal mask mandate for all activities outside of the home, with fines to back it up. If people need a medical exemption they can go get one, but have to carry a card showing it.

I was under the impression the universal mask mandate was part of the new lockdown that Newsom introduced.

Yes, but it’s not enforced and it’s super squishy. It not only needs to be enforced, it needs to dispense with the six feet nonsense and be universal, at all times, no exceptions except for people with some documented medical condition.

Yeah, we gotta stop messin' around. The medical authorities in L.A. anticipate a "viral tsunami" and they are already at 0% capacity. Newsom's gotta get tough. Basically, someone's gotta talk him into it. Wouldn't surprise me if it happened very soon.

Make it easy -$50 fine the first time you’re caught without one on. Escalate fines from there. Any sheriff or local law enforcement who refuses to enforce is fired.

Sometimes circumstances require elected officials to take strong action. Masks are a perfect thing to do this on considering the cost to the average citizen is near zero and the benefit to society is huge.

Use the hammer - break any person who tries to stop it.

They could give an offender a mask on first offense (if they say they don't have one), register it in the database. 2nd offense, get tough.

THAT kind of silly nonsense is why Texas wants out.
The governor of a different state enacting public health regulations that have no effect in Texas is why Texas wants to secede? That’s baffling. Do Texans understand how federalism works?

Texas GOP wants to secede for one reason and one reason only - they are throwing a temper tantrum because they are entitled crybabies.

States imposing totalitarianism is why some states want no part of the Union. Very similar to 150 and some odd years back. Draconian rules have no place in a free society

Requiring people to wear a cloth face covering is totalitarianism? Lol.

If you think that’s the case you must think George Washington was a monster considering when he faced a pandemic he did much more extreme things. Can you confirm you think George Washington was a monster?

No. States previously left the union because they wanted to own human beings as property and they were afraid the north would make them stop.
