    The downfall of the Whigs.

"The party was ultimately destroyed by the question of whether to allow the expansion of slavery to the territories. With deep fissures in the party on this question, the anti-slavery faction successfully prevented the nomination of its own incumbent President Fillmore in the U.S. presidential election of 1852; instead, the party nominated General Winfield Scott, who was soundly defeated. Its leaders quit politics (as Lincoln did temporarily) or changed parties. The voter base defected to the Republican Party, various coalition parties in some states, and to the Democratic Party. By 1856, the party had lost its ability to maintain a national coalition of effective state parties and was third, trailing the Democratic and Republican parties in the popular vote."

Any one else see correlations to the current Republican party?

So to use an analogy, we should sell guns to both sides and let them kill each other off and then just move in and take over?

I think cannibalism would be what's going to be happening over the next year or so.

I heard something interesting from a coworker today - claimed that in states that aways went blue, or went red, "if a state always goes blue, that depresses the Republican voters, because they don't bother to show up." I asked, "if a state always goes blue, wouldn't it also be likely that a democratic voter wouldn't show up, because he wasn't as worried about his opinion getting through?" "No, they all show up and vote." Ummm, okay.

I am sorry I mistranslated repulsives as repugs, I should have known better. If you mean "having fun" by celebrating America's victory over the backward GOP mindset, then I am enjoying it also. Tell me though, what kind of person "can't wait for it to all fall apart" to the point that people just begin shooting each other?

The gerrymandered districts usually assure that the Republicans, and in some states, Democrats, have something to vote for, even if they have no voice in the presidential race.

Republicans are going to have to do something about the 'ask about rape and abortions for a free win' cheat code. Clearly prolifers aren't voting based on tangible results so it seems like compromising or dancing around this issue would be a better strategy.

And to think that when President Ford was in office the Republican party was pro-choice with the first lady being the cheerleader.

Absolutism of ideology, will keep marginalizing the Republicans.

I recently moved from Connecticut to Indiana, which an extremely RED state. I made sure I registered so I could vote against Mr Mourdock and the Republicans\Tea Party. Typically voting here is an exercise is futility. But every now and then a Republican will do something something stupid and lose.

If the US demographics are changing, which they are. Then the Tea Party\Republicans will continue to lose elections and become the regional Southern party.

Don't be ridiculous. They could probably get Idaho and Utah along with the South.

I wonder if Democrat operatives have attempted to infiltrate the Tea Party in an attempt to increase the nuttiness. The Tea Party may prove to be the Democrats' best friend.

The Tea Party is being driven by the Koch Brothers and John Birch Society types. All the Democrats have to do is sit back and watch.

Sounds great but will never work, it is to late, the Republican party is on its last legs, and the one party system boat has just left the dock.

Republicans, (the grown ups in the room) know they can't give more free stuff away, can't give amnesty to a bunch of law breakers, can't have lax border security, can't stop deportations, can't say it is all rich White guys fault and mean it.

If they could they would be called Democrats!

There is simply no way they can get the minority backing they need to be a relevant party, at least not with out severely compromising their core principals. If they do that they are no longer Republicans they would be some kind of hybrid Democrap party.

The GOP has gone against its core principals for a very long time. It just is finally catching up with them again. They are only small government and states rights when it suits them. They are only for religious freedom for Christan's and jews. They are just as big of spenders as the democrats. They just want to spend on different things. The only party that is close to those core principles is the libertarian party. But they go to far in many views to ever be main stream. The religious right and neo-cons have corrupted the party plain and simple.

This why I cry for what used to be the Republican Party.

They don't get that its the wacky social conservatives and the racists that are killing thie party, not their ideas of smaller government, deregulation, etc.

They don't get its guys saying women can't get pregnant from rape that's killing thier party.

Even one of the most successful immigrant groups in our history, Asians, are overwhelmingly Democratic.

Its the crazies and racists that are killing the Republicans

I for one am one of those. Voting Lib >>>> Neocon.

I always knew you liked Bush. Deep down, the Neocon is your best friend. Maybe you shouldn't try so hard to defeat them. If they won more elections real conservatives would be side lined entirely.

So the Tea Party with Fox as its loudspeaker can double down on failed politics and lose the next election even harder, sounds like a winning combo.

Since when are republicans the grownups?

Democrats were the ones who wanted to make a deal with Republicans to make spending cuts but Republicans torpedoed it because they're a bunch of babies, if anything, you should be pissed off at republicans for stonewalling everything democrats do:

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/...rs-renege-on-debt-limit-deal-defense-cuts.php

Being obstructionists on EVERYTHING the democrats do, even cutting spending is the OPPOSITE of grownup. You've been fed so much garbage by the 'conservative entertainment complex' (as conservative David Frum puts it) that you can't distinguish realty from the raving rants of lunatics.

Edit: Also, please explain to me how cutting taxes and starting 2 wars is being 'grown up'.

I'm glad America is FINALLY waking up to the realization of the rampant Repuglicant Obstructionism this President had to endure.
