I was just playing some Jedi Academy and started thinking...

And yeah I know Star Wars has magic (force) and is therefore not based anywhere near this reality, but the Star Wars is close enough to being set in this universe that it should still adhere to some physical rules.

1)I keep having to lead moving targets while using a LASER rifle from 30 ft. away.

b)The laser "bolt" should get to the target almost instantaneously.

a)How is it that you can SEE a laser bolt coming toward you? That would mean that the bolt is emitting light that somehow travels faster than light to reach your eye before the actual laser does.

2)Lightsaber Duels=WTF

a)Lightsabers themselves are mysterious in that they emit a laser and then have it arbitrarily stop at some convenient point. I've always thought about lightsabers as being lasers contained by a force field of some sort which can only interact with this mysterious glowing laser energy stuff. Which means that the forcefield only interacts with lasers and other lightsabers, and all other things pass through it to get f-ed up by the laser.

b)Lightsaber duels are MUCH too slow. You're using a weapon with a WEIGHTLESS BLADE that can CUT THROUGH ANYTHING! Therefore the strength of a blow is irrelevant (F=MA, M=very small), and there should be no swinging motions at all. Lightsaber technique should consist of a sort of fencing style except faster due to the lack of weight. In fact, the style should be almost exactly analogous to competitive fencing in which a touch would equal a kill. Expanding on this analogy, lightsaber duels should be over in seconds as most touches are scored within seconds, and also more often than not, the winner would not escape unscathed due to momentum.

That's all I can think of off the top of head, but there are probably a gajillion more...

sorry the original subject is too geeky, so now it needs to be retitled "What C3PO and Chewie get up to when the lights go out"

omfg I've wondered the exact same things in the OP before, i am equally crackass

but i always figured that if i'm happy with watching movies where people take 1000% more dmg than any human could withstand, i can live with it

Science Fiction is there to entice our creativity and to flagrantly portray the impossbile as everyday for the sake of novelty. It will not do anyone any good to anylyze the vailidity of something that is, by its intended purpose, ludicrous.

Go to sleep, think about hot women, wake up, do your homework, and forget about this F=ma nonsense.

Gossemaster: you're right... partially. Star Wars tries to explain away it's anamolous aspects (ie. aliens, advanced technology, weird microscopic things in your blood that give you powers, etc.), and that's fine. The problem is with the anomolous things that aren't explained. You can't have it both ways: trying to come off sounding reasonable by providing halfway decent explanations for half the things then leaving the other half unexplained. For example Q:Why can this guy lift things with his mind? A:He's magic. Q:Why can't he fly? A:Umm...

Keep in mind that thigns that you consider everyday would have blown someones mind when star wars came out...

Computers that fit on your desk and are 100s of times faster than all of the computers combined of that era. Encryption that will take the machiens of today billions of years to decrypt. Digital Audio that is approching the analog is precision and accuracy. Communications that allow streaming better-than-theater quality video to your home on demand...

Just because you do not understand it does not mean that it cannot be done...Seeing lazers? Perhaps a light-version of the tracer.

Also, keep in mind that hte Hero in a movie should appeal to everyone,as he is to eb their leader. That is why he must be brave and fearless, but also respective of traditions and honor, hence the drawn out sword fighting.

It is his fantasy. He can do whatever he wants. He puts a lot of effort in gathering people that will create a movie based on theis fantasy.

His rules, because by its nature, it is just a fallacy. He decides how far he takes it. That is why it is pointless to discuss stuff like this. It bypasses logic and enters the realm of personal preference.

You're right, it's his fantasy. Unfortunately for him, regardless of the fantasy, logic still applies in all universes, real or imagined, that can be grasped by the human mind. What;s illogical here is illogical there. It's an even more universal set of rules than physics.

The Star Wars world was created by Lucas. It really has nothing to do with the world I live in and the physics that I live with. Save yourself the time trying to rationalize this and just enjoy it.
