Yeah in fact any decent cooler hardly fits in that box. The huge socket/IHS size of TR is kind of a problem. If it does not ship with a good cooler, anyone buying git must add another $100 or more to the price tag because you need a new cooler which you don't with Skylake-X.

Skylake x requires users to spend that much on a cooler as well. Not to mention they need to get something beefy to cool the crazy thermals. Spending $100 to cool a CPU like this is nothing new.

Are you serious? That's like highend users caring about integrated graphics. They both get replaced by superior 3rd party products and are practically a nonfactor for HEDT.

No but you can use any of your existing cooler. Don't even need a new bracket as 2066 is compatible with 2011. In contrast TR has such a huge IHS, that you need a completely new cooler with larger base plate.

I'd never reuse a cooler in an expensive high end build. No need to cheap out on a cheap part.

An tower cooler basically last you forever. Why would you ever change it unless you switch to AIO? Yes, the fans might die but just get new ones...

Nope I wasn't but you can use your 5 year old tower cooler as an example on Skylake-x which you can't on threadripper. 2066 uses same mounting wholes as 2011 which goes back very far and for example noctua usually offers new brackets for free. Threadripper requires a new larger baseplate and hence a new cooler. No way around it.

Still point being? AM4/TR4 is like AMD started from scratch , Intel have improved over iterations and managed quiet successfully older heat sink support either with new brackets or backplate. I am quiet pleased for example with the simple screw install of AM4 with semi support for older existing designs. But on what earlier design would they have to go on for Threadripper?

A lot of us don't have compatible coolers. Mine sits on a Phenom 9950. Will it fit a Skylake-X part?

Even my 6700k didn't come with a cooler. If you can afford to drop 800+ on a CPU, you can likely afford a good cooling solution.

While if you want to air cool, it looks like you will need a new heatsink. If you have an Asetek AIO you may be in luck. According to an Asetek rep on reddit their current coolers should work with TR. https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/6gw8f6/dell_announces_alienware_area51_threadripper/

That jives with the Arctic AIOs being announced compatible. According to the packaging list for those coolers on the Arctic website the TR cpus come with the needed retention bracket for the TR socket.

TR is a whole new everything compared to AMD's before. I have tons of Core2 hsf's that can't work on SB and higher. Why? Only because the spacing for the pivets was extended. Get over it if you can.

Seriously? Get a new mounting bracket and any old decent cooler will work on a new similar sized socket with different spacing. Of course that doesn't work with the junk to comes with the CPUs or if the manufacturer sucks and doesn't offer new brackets. For example for noctua heat sinks you can get a free new bracket even if your cooler is out of warranty. And why wouldn't you? First it saves you money for a full new cooler and secondly it's a waste of resources to toss a perfectly fine cooler.

Get over it if you can.

Seems like its the last argument that is in favor for Skylake X. That it is compatible with old air coolers (which by the way may not even be good enough to prevent throttling at stock). That far we have come lol
