I think the real thing that is 'reviving' (when did it die?) pc gaming is the architecture of the consoles. They are now much much closer to PC's so we should see some higher quality ports and just more ports in general.

Personally I only game on the PC, but both systems have advantages. I play PC mainly because of the wider variety of games and also because I have trouble using a controller due to some hand issues. I dont consider my PC expensive, because I would have a PC anyway, and got one with a good power supply on sale and just added a HD7770 for 100.00.

However, one big advantage to consoles that no one has mentioned is that more than one person can play on the same console at the same time. This is great for family gaming or gaming with friends and avoids the need for a separate system and game copy for each player.

<snip to save space>

Edit: I forgot to mention, it applies to brand-new games and pre-orders as well. I can't remember the last time I pre-ordered a game at full price. I pre-ordered Remember Me for $33 on GreenManGaming. I pre-ordered GRID 2 for $30 at the same place. On GamersGate, you could pre-order Resident Evil: Revelations for basically $30 (you payed $47, but got $17 back in-store credit). If you are a console gamer who pre-ordered those same games, how much would you have to pay? $60 for each one. Maybe $50 if you're lucky.

Hell, guess what? You can get the PC version of Aliens: Colonial Marines for free right now. Goddamn free. And it's a boxed version no less. Order it from Newegg, enter the code EMCXPVX237 to get $5 off, and then submit the mail-in rebate to get the other $15 back. Boom, enjoy your free game. (Offer won't last forever, obviously).

Sorry if I sound kind of rude. If someone says console gaming is as cheap as PC gaming, I just can't take them seriously.

Last game I pre-ordered for 360 was GoW Judgement and it was $40. I find those deals quite frequently actually.

But yeah in general, PC games are a lot cheaper. The only other thing I disagree about is the cost of the PC. In the long run it will cost you a lot more than $800 over the same time span the console covers. Then there is the possibility of needing more than 1 console...

Ultimately it is too difficult to debate. You can game on a $300 laptop and you can game on a $2000 laptop, it comes down to preference. You can't argue it without making assumptions, and those assumptions will never align with everyone.

Yeah that is true... but not many games target the 2 player same TV experience (that I've seen) outside of Nintendo. And even ones that do are sometimes just unbearable.

That said, it's still a plus for consoles.

Not going to happen. Games are an inherently limited art form. Like, most attempts at telling story in games results in basically cutscenes + busywork. That's really annoying IMO. PC games are neat in a technical sense, like Battlefield 3's SP campaign was genuinely impressive, but the next-gen consoles will likely clean up.

Future is gonna be tablet pc gaming.

Reasons:

1. intimate and interactive. More intimate than pc games, and more interactive too due to touch + gyro controls

2. played on the go. one of the best places to play games is at the airport, or while waiting in something mundane.

3. More predictable hardware that only gets better. It seems like with pc games I always run into a gazillion issues that require me to go hack some .ini file or else the game will run with no sound or not run at all. Tablets, even google android and its famous fragmentation, do not have this problem.

I played some Eliss and bit.trip.beat on an iphone today while waiting, and it was IMO more satisfying than playing the latest Frostbite game on my gaming pc.
in my game world 5.1 expands the game world-room shaking sound when offered by the game.
-I can see gluing a number of ear buds to your ears to get 5.0 but the 10" sub. in your backpack to get 5.1 would get heavy after a while I would think.

I realize most of you laugh when you read about PC gaming being dead, or having died; but when most of the platforms "best" games have been embarrassingly bad ports for nearly a decade, I'd consider that at least some form of death. If you look at PC gaming strictly as a business, then sure, it's been surviving.

Ports have been generally improving at least, but the trend needs to continue, as they still often need mods, tools, and tweaks to be at a standard I'd consider spending time on.

Steam is part of the reason PC gaming has gone to hell. It's perpetuated the idea of 'friendly DRM', and now everyone else is trying to imitate it. Soon you won't be able to install a single game without having to install the publisher's Steam-clone bloatware alongside it.

yeah 1st it used to be steam only, we were happy we cud get all games at same place. but now origin and uplay also came.. and i have 2 install all these. it irritating.

There are quite a few games on Steam that are DRM free and will run perfectly fine without starting the Steam client first. In most cases these games can be zipped up and transferred to systems without Steam with no problems.
